The Boston Red Sox<\/a> may have dodged a bullet with one of their premier pitching prospects.<\/p>\n

Juan Valera exited Thursday’s start<\/a> for\u00a0High-A Greenville with elbow inflammation. The 19-year-old reportedly avoided a severe setback.<\/p>\n

Valera will not require an MRI or X-ray on his elbow, per Ari Alexander<\/a> of 7News Boston. The Red Sox will reportedly shut him down from throwing for two weeks.<\/p>\n

Red Sox fans held their breath when Valera left<\/a> the second inning of his recent start for the Drive. He crouched down on the mound in apparent discomfort after his first pitch of the inning.<\/p>\n

Valera began the season as Boston’s No. 5 prospect and garnered the final spot in Baseball America’s preseason top 100<\/a>. The 2023 international signing has turned heads by firing a triple-digit heater and power slider.<\/p>\n

The right-hander began the season with a bang, amassing 17 strikeouts over 9 1\/3 highly promising innings while allowing just four hits and two runs. Valera worked five scoreless frames on April 9, only the third time in his professional career he’s lasted that long in a start.<\/p>\n

This isn’t the first injury for Valera, who sat out three months last season due to elbow soreness. The Red Sox will likely continue to exude ample caution with their hard-throwing teenage prospect, who joins Payton Tolle, Kyson Witherspoon, and Anthony Eyanson among the organization’s tantalizing young pitchers.<\/p>\n
