Mets lose 10 straight after NYC mayor&#8217;s Mr., Mrs. Met hug"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s the Curse of the Mambino!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/19\/sports\/mets-drop-11th-straight-in-nightmare-extra-inning-loss-to-cubs\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The New York Mets have lost 10 straight games<\/a> since Mayor Zohran Mamdani hugged mascot Mr. Met during a Citi Field photo opp \u2014 and now fuming fans are blaming Hizzoner for squeezing the mojo out of the Amazins.<\/p>\n<p>The battered fan base has been left singing \u201cMeet the Mess\u201d as it gets late early for the team, which has limped to a 7-15 record despite a $381 million payroll, and is now in the midst of an 11-game losing streak that includes 10 straight losses since Mamdani embraced Mr. and Mrs. Met on April 9.<\/p>\n<p>NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani is all smiles as he meets Mr. and Mrs. Met. That was bad juju, that was no good,\u201d said Mets fan and Bronx resident Nelson Berrios while sporting a team hat in Midtown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he hugged them, I was like what\u2019s going on? Nobody touches Mr. Met, only Mrs. Met, that\u2019s it,\u201d added the 49-year-old, who said he voted for Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic socialist mayor\u2019s visit had the stated purpose of cheering on stadium workers, but critics were left jeering after the team\u2019s skid left them in last place of the National League East \u2013 with some calling the basement dwellers \u201cThe Mamdani Mets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others said the mayor cast a \u201ccurse\u201d on the lovable losers as bad as the infamous \u201cCurse of the Bambino,\u201d a longstanding myth that claimed the Boston Red Sox were hit with bad luck when they sold star Babe Ruth to the rival Yankees in 1919. The Sox didn\u2019t win a World Series for 86 years after the deal, while the Yankees picked up 26 titles over the same stretch.<\/p>\n<p>Some Mamdani critics cracked jokes that the mayor, who campaigned on hiking taxes on wealthy New Yorkers, was squeezing the mojo out of the Mets like he wants to squeeze taxpayers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Mets are embracing Mamdani Socialism: they\u2019re spreading wins around to teams with far lower payrolls,\u201d one social <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/trippwhitbeck\/status\/2046033434200395937?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">media commenter quipped<\/a> in reference to the Mets\u2019 payroll \u2013 one of the highest in all of baseball.<\/p>\n<p>Another social <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GencoOliveOil7\/status\/2046037224781713792?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">media user said<\/a> he viewed the stunning losing streak as redistributing the double-digit wins to other teams \u201ceach according to their need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An MLB Store employee in Midtown Manhattan also bought into the frenzy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt might be Mamdani,\u201d said the worker, who did not want to be identified.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it might have been him, truthfully. My friend works at Citi Field, and he\u2019s confused why they keep losing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott, a Queens resident, also faulted the mayor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know what, I don\u2019t like Mamdani so yes, I do,\u201d the 55-year-old joked.<\/p>\n<p>Bronx resident Nelson Berrios told The Post that Mayor Mamdani gave his beloved Mets \u201cbad juju\u201d during the video with Mr. and Mrs. Met. Lone Pine Press for NY Post<\/p>\n<p>Barstool founder Dave Portnoy and Outkick founder Clay Travis were among the high-profile sports fans who have also pointed out the Mam-to-Mets connection.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But not everyone was sold on the \u201cCurse of the Mambino.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, it\u2019s the Mets,\u201d wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JoshPhillipsPhD\/status\/2046014447064432842?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">another social media user<\/a> said of the team, which hasn\u2019t won a World Series since 1986. \u201cI don\u2019t think hugging Mamdani really mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/13\/us-news\/nyc-ny-politics-live-updates-on-zohran-mamdani-governors-race-more-april-13-14-15-16-17-18-19\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Follow live updates on Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s socialist agenda and the latest in NYC politics<\/a><\/p>\n<p>City Hall did not take a swing at weighing in on the Mets\u2019 losing streak.<\/p>\n<p>While social media chatter claimed the 11-game losing skid was all since Mamdani\u2019s photo op, the 34-year-old pol\u2019s hug came one game after the losing streak was already underway.<\/p>\n<p>The team had Monday off after a six-game road trip to play the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs and are set to return to Citi Field on Tuesday to play the Minnesota Twins.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mark Vientos breaks his bat after popping out to infield during a game against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, April 19, 2026. Matt Marton-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>The Metropolitans came into the season with promise even after losing core players like first baseman Pete Alonso, second baseman Jeff McNeil and outfielder Brandon Nimmo in the off-season and following a 2025 campaign in which the New York club was a laughing stock of the league.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s suffering. I think Mets fans, including myself, like to claim onto anything to blame our woes,\u201d Met Cast co-host Ray Eckert theorized.<\/p>\n<p>He compared the early 2026 campaign to the 2007 season, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2007\/10\/01\/collapse-complete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">when the Mets blew a seven-game lead<\/a> with 17 games to lose out on a playoff spot.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn all honesty, it\u2019s probably the most frustrating thing I\u2019ve had to deal with since the collapse of 2007,\u201d Eckert said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, expectations were just as high this year as they were back then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Partial season ticket holder David Fenichel, who\u2019s been a Mets fan for more than 50 years, said he wouldn\u2019t surprised if the boo-birds will be out during the club\u2019s next game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t expect them to be standing and cheering when the Mets take the field,\u201d said Fenichel, 61.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a frustrating year. I remember 2024 raised everyone\u2019s hopes. In 2025 kind of flopped and this year is looking even worse.
