Twenty-two games in, they are sitting at 9-13. They are tied with the Toronto Blue Jays in the basement of the American League East. Not a position either team figured they would be in at this point in the season.

Boston will open a three-game series at home against the New York Yankees on Tuesday night. The juice for a Red Sox/Yankees series isn’t there right now. The Yankees are 13-9 and sitting on top of the AL East. Boston could make things interesting with a series win over its heated rivals.

The Red Sox were staring at a series loss to the Detroit Tigers on Monday afternoon at Fenway Park. After dropping two of the first three games, Boston was trailing 3-2 before they rallied for an 8-6 win. It wasn’t that they rallied for the win, but how they did, and manager Alex Cora explained Boston’s recipe for success in 2026.

Boston Red Sox Manager Alex Cora Describes Keys To Success in 2026

Down a run in the bottom of the sixth, Carlos Narváez doubled with one out. After Roman Anthony saw three pitches, Boston’s catcher broke for third base and successfully stole it. Anthony delivered an RBI single to tie the game.

The Red Sox scored three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth for an 8-3 lead before they held off a late Tigers ninth rally for an 8-6 win. The win was even more impressive after starter Sonny Gray exited the game in the top of the third inning, putting a lot of pressure on the bullpen. Eight pitches combined to allow five runs over the final six-plus innings, while Narváez and the offense took over.

“There was traffic, we ran the bases well, we put pressure on the opposition, and that’s where we’re at right now, right?” Cora said. “Narvi had a great game. We used everybody. … That’s what it’s going to take for us to score runs. And we will maximize the roster.”

Narváez finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. He had an RBI single in the seventh inning. However, it wasn’t pretty, but it was a win, something that hasn’t come easily for the Red Sox early in the season.

Boston Red Sox Face Early-Season Showdown With the Yankees

The Red Sox and Yankees will meet for the first time in 2026, beginning Tuesday night. Boston will have to navigate the series without their top two pitchers, Garrett Crochet and Gray, who will likely end up on the injured list. Furthermore, New York will counter with Max Fried in the middle game of the series.

If there was a time for the Red Sox to win a series in 2026, it would be against the Yankees. Monday’s win was the blueprint for the 2026 Boston Red Sox to have success this season. A team effort from top to bottom.

However, a series loss and Boston is right back where they were earlier in the season, stuck in the middle of nowhere. The blueprint has been laid out for success in 2026 for the Boston Red Sox.

Scott Roche Scott Roche covers college football, NFL, NBA and MLB for Heavy.com and has three decades of sports writing, covering everything from college to professional sports. More about Scott Roche

   More Heavy on Red Sox

    Loading more stories

[2375
5,141,48,2542,4,89,2543
0":"post-680346","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-boston-red-sox","8":"tag-baseball","9":"tag-boston","10":"tag-boston-red-sox","11":"tag-bostonredsox","12":"tag-mlb","13":"tag-red-sox","14":"tag-redsox
["GET
