It’s hard to get on base, certainly when everyone’s trying to target you. This streak is one of the great ones, and hopefully he can keep it going.”

Through his first 21 games of the season, Ohtani is hitting .272 with five home runs, 11 RBIs and a stolen bases. It may look like a slow start from a pure numbers perspective. But the slugger’s on base streak shows how valuable he has been to the Dodgers. Coming off of three-straight MVP seasons though, Los Angeles was already well aware.

Hitting at the top of the lineup, Ohtani getting on base allows for the rest of Los Angeles to do damage. Opposing pitchers already know how much power the designated hitter provides. But simply getting on base makes the Dodgers much scarier overall.

That was the franchise’s exact plan when they signed Ohtani to a $700 million contract. Now, he is on the precipice of even further Dodgers history. Who knows, if he keeps his streak up maybe the four-time MVP reaches Ted Williams territory. He has already surpassed Ruth.

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is climbing up the franchise leaderboards, reaching base for a 52-straight game on Monday.
