The San Diego Padres<\/a> earned a 1-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. In a game dominated by pitching, one may have imagined that the best closer in MLB was involved. Padres star Mason Miller<\/a> did not pitch in the ninth inning on Tuesday, however. Padres manager Craig Stammen was asked about the decision<\/a> to not have Miller pitch in the game, via 97.3 The Fan.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe just had a day off today,\u201d Stammen said. \u201cWe decided Adrian (Morejon) was a good person for the ninth inning. Mason will be fine going forward, but we got to take it easy on him. We’ve used him a lot over the last week or so. He’s not a robot.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Stammen mentioned, Morejon received the save opportunity against the Rockies. He struck out two hitters and ultimately recorded the save. Overall, Padres pitchers allowed only three hits and did not walk any batters in the contest.<\/p>\n

It seems as if Miller is fine as well. The Padres star not only leads the league with eight saves in 2026, but Miller has been dominant on the mound<\/a>. The right-handed hurler has not surrendered a run in 11.1 innings pitched this year. If he continues to perform at an elite level, Miller could emerge as a Cy Young candidate<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As for Miller’s day off on Tuesday, Stammen added that the decision was made on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was us deciding that probably on Sunday, that if he pitched Sunday he had two days off,\u201d Stammen said. \u201c\u2026 Internally thought about it ahead of time. We felt good about it today still.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mason Miller will likely be available on Wednesday night against the Rockies.<\/p>\n
