The Hope College baseball team outslugged Alma College in the series finale, winning 14-11 on Tuesday at Scots Park.<\/p>\n

The two teams combined to score 97 runs over their three-game series. Alma took the first and second games by 23-13 scores but slipped into third place in the MIAA standings following Tuesday’s loss.<\/p>\n

Senior right fielder Brenden Collins<\/a> of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Hackett Catholic) and sophomore left fielder Corbin Bennetts<\/a> (Jenison, Michigan \/ Jenison) spearheaded an 18-hit Flying Dutchmen attack by drilling five hits apiece.<\/p>\n

Bennetts went 5-for-6 with four RBIs and one run, including a run-scoring double that capped a six-run first inning.<\/p>\n

Collins finished 5-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored, including a sixth-inning solo homer.<\/p>\n

Hope jumped to a 6-0 lead in the top of first. Bennetts opened the game with a triple and scored following two walks and a bases-clearing double from senior first baseman Cade Seabaugh<\/a> (Ballwin, Missouri \/ Ladue Horton).<\/p>\n

Two batters later, Collins followed with an RBI double. The Flying Dutchmen sent 11 batters to the plate, with sophomore catcher Thatcher Simon<\/a> of Byron Center, Michigan (Byron Center) contributing a sacrifice fly and Bennetts stroking an RBI double.<\/p>\n

Alma (22-11-1, 10-5 MIAA) rallied back to within a run twice, but Hope answered each time.<\/p>\n

The Collins blast in the third stretched the Flying Dutch’s lead to 7-5. An RBI double from sophomore third baseman Nick Verduzco<\/a> of Kalamazoo, Michigan (Hackett Catholic) in the fourth made it 8-6.<\/p>\n

Bennetts added an RBI single in the seventh and ripped a two-run triple in the eighth following a two-run double from senior center fielder Jace DeMann<\/a> of Byron Center, Michigan (South Christian).<\/p>\n

Reliever Josiah Long<\/a> of Newaygo, Michigan (Newaygo) earned the decision with 5.1 innings of relief. The sophomore right-hander allowed three hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out two and walking two.<\/p>\n

The victory moved the Flying Dutchmen within two games of the final spot in the upcoming four-team MIAA Tournament. There are two three-game series remaining.\u00a0Hope (11-23, 5-10 MIAA) is next scheduled to play on Friday, April 25, at 4 p.m. against Calvin University at Boeve Stadium in the series opener.\u00a0The University of Olivet is in fourth place with a 7-8 league record. Albion College is in fifth at 6-9.<\/p>\n
