{"id":681984,"date":"2026-04-24T09:51:16","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T09:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/681984\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T09:51:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T09:51:16","slug":"15-year-marliniversary-stantons-8th-inning-blast-breaks-tie-propels-fish-past-rockies-marlins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/681984\/","title":{"rendered":"15-year Marliniversary: Stanton&#8217;s 8th-inning blast breaks tie, propels Fish past Rockies &#8211; Marlins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tAfter An\u00edbal S\u00e1nchez <a href=\"https:\/\/fishonfirst.com\/news-rumors\/miami-marlins\/2011-anibal-sanchez-highlights-rockies-mlb-history\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">took a no-hitter into the ninth inning<\/a> to open the Florida Marlins\u2019 home series with the Colorado Rockies early during the 2011 season, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stantmi03.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-24_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Giancarlo Stanton<\/a> (then known as Mike Stanton) capped it with a bang.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOn this day 15 years ago, Stanton\u2019s three-run blast in the bottom of the eighth delivered the Marlins past the Rockies in the rubber game of a three-game series, 6-3.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tLike S\u00e1nchez two nights prior, Marlins starter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=johnsjo09,johnso031jos,johnso027jos,johnsjo11&amp;search=Josh+Johnson&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-24_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Johnson<\/a> had kept the Rockies hitless through five innings at Sun Life Stadium on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/boxes\/FLO\/FLO201104240.shtml\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 24, 2011<\/a>. Florida finally broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning on a bases-clearing triple from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/infanom01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-24_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Omar Infante<\/a>. Colorado, however, fought back.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAfter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/herrejo03.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-24_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Herrera<\/a>\u2019s RBI double got the Rockies on the board in the sixth, Colorado drew even at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the eighth against the Florida bullpen. Rockies lefty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=reynol006mat,reynoma02,reynoma03&amp;search=Matt+Reynolds&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-24_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Reynolds<\/a> was able to strike out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/coghlch01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-24_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chris Coghlan<\/a> to open the bottom of the inning, but a pitching change to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/belisma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-24_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Matt Belisle<\/a> was made shortly after.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tInfante was able to single off Belisle, who followed by striking out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ramirha01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-24_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hanley Ram\u00edrez<\/a>. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sanchga01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-24_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gaby S\u00e1nchez<\/a> worked a six-pitch walk, Stanton came to the plate with two outs and the go-ahead run in scoring position.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tStanton took the first pitch for a ball. The second pitch was in the strike zone and the Florida slugger didn\u2019t miss it. On an offspeed pitch that got too much of the plate, Stanton turned on it for a no-doubter as the Marlins took a 6-3 lead.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nunezle01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=fishonfirst.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-04-24_br\" rel=\"external nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Juan Carlos Oviedo<\/a>\u2014then known as Leo N\u00fa\u00f1ez\u2014worked a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the win and collect the save. Lefty Mike Dunn was credited with the victory.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn addition to Infante\u2019s two hits, Stanton\u2019s game-winning blast was the only other hit for Florida. It happened to be the biggest one of the game.
