The series opener between the Cleveland Guardians<\/a> and Toronto Blue Jays went to the good guys, with the Guardians coming away with an 8-6 victory on Friday night.<\/p>\n

Between the pitching and hitting, this was an all-around solid win for the Guardians. Here are three takeaways from Cleveland\u2019s win.<\/p>\n

With Steven Kwan getting an off day, Daniel Schneemann kicked off the series as Cleveland\u2019s leadoff hitter. At first, it may seem like an odd choice, but his .408 OBP on the season tells a different story.<\/p>\n

Having Schneemann hit first proved to be a wise decision by Stephen Vogt because the left-hander started the game with a lead-off home run and ripped an RBI double later on in the night. Schneemann ended up on base three times in the series opener and<\/p>\n

Not to mention, Schneemann also made some solid defensive plays at first base, too. The strong start to the 2026 season continues for the 29-year-old, who is putting together a true breakout season.<\/p>\n

Speaking of strong starts and breakout seasons, Angel Martinez continued his in the series opener, too. The switch-hitter has always been much better from the right side of the plate, but was forced to the left side with right-hander Max Scherzer on the mound.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t matter, though, with Martinez coming away with his first career multi-home run game. He hit a pair of home runs off the future Hall of Famer.<\/p>\n

The second home run came after Martinez found himself down 0-2 in the count, but worked it all the way back to 3-2, and hit the homer on the 11th pitch of the AB.<\/p>\n

The bullpen has faced some criticism over the last week or so for its efficiency. Thankfully, after a much-needed off day, the group looked to be back on track with a clean outing after Gavin Williams\u2019 night was over.<\/p>\n

Hunter Gaddis came in during the seventh inning and pitched a quick, eight-pitch perfect inning. Erik Sabrowksi followed him up with a 1-2-3 eighth inning of his own.<\/p>\n

Cade Smith and the command were still shaky in the ninth inning. He gave up two hits and didn\u2019t strike out a single batter. That said, he got the job done, closed the door on the Blue Jays, and was credited with the save.<\/p>\n
