The 33-year-old outfielder is now eligible to sign with any Major League Baseball franchise as he seeks to revitalize his career.

The Marlins officially cut ties with Slater earlier this week on April 23 to make roster space for Esteury Ruiz, who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. During his brief 12-game stint in Miami, Slater struggled at the plate, posting a .174 batting average with only four hits in 28 at-bats.

“Former Marlins OF Austin Slater cleared waivers and has elected free agency,” reported Craig Mish of SportsGrid on Sunday afternoon. The move follows a period of significant instability for the player, who has moved between six different franchises since 2024.

Slater was previously a staple for the San Francisco Giants, playing 593 games for the organization between 2017 and 2024. During his peak years in San Francisco, he was recognized as an elite role player against left-handed pitching, maintaining a career .263/.354/.423 slash line against southpaws.

However, his performance has dipped sharply since being traded from the Giants in 2024. Since that departure, Slater has hit a collective .210 with seven home runs across stints with the Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, New York Yankees, and most recently, the Marlins.

The veteran’s reunion with Marlins general manager Gabe Kapler, who managed Slater for several seasons in San Francisco, failed to produce a turnaround. Slater recorded just one RBI, one run, and one stolen base during his time with the Miami club this season.

According to MLB Trade Rumors, Slater may have to consider minor league opportunities or look toward international leagues if a major league contract does not materialize. His career totals over 10 seasons include 45 home runs and 185 RBIs in 711 games.

The Marlins, currently holding a 13-14 record, concluded their series against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees remain at the top of the American League East as they finish their current series against the Houston Astros.

Veteran outfielder Austin Slater elected free agency on Sunday, April 26, 2026, after clearing waivers following his recent…

[2395
4155,5,86487,1816,778,58,4171,4,2046,66
0":"post-683749","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-miami-marlins","8":"tag-austin-slater","9":"tag-baseball","10":"tag-baseball-waivers","11":"tag-marlins","12":"tag-miami","13":"tag-miami-marlins","14":"tag-miamimarlins","15":"tag-mlb","16":"tag-mlb-free-agency","17":"tag-san-francisco-giants
["GET
