So we’re just going to continue that track until we feel the strength numbers are where they’re supposed to be, he feels good and he can ramp up more.”

Crochet will be eligible to come off the IL on Tuesday, but unlike with Gray, who Tracy said was clearly on track to return after the 15-day minimum from early on, Crochet’s situation is different and they want to make sure he’s fully built back up before activating him.

As far as whether or not Crochet will need to make a rehab assignment, Tracy said that will depend on how long he’s out.

“I think it’s hard to say, I think that’s going to end up depending on how long he’s on there. Like Sonny, he got better quick and we knew pretty quickly it was going to be the minimum,” Tracy said. “He was still throwing throughout the duration of that, at least to an intensity where the arm keeps moving, so we felt like hey if we get him in a live BP I think we’ll be fine, and he felt that way too. I think with Garrett it depends on how long does this go and do we feel it’s been long enough where he should probably go face hitters and build up a little bit before he’s here.”

As for fellow left-hander Ranger Suarez, who left his last start with right hamstring tightness, Tracy said he’s still progressing but the club hasn’t decided when or if he’ll make his next start.

“We’re going to keep kicking it down the line to see where he’s at,” Tracy said. “We’ll decide obviously as we get into tomorrow, we’re going to have to make a decision on is he going to start on that day, are we going to push it? But he’s still making improvements.”

Extra innings

The Red Sox haven’t decided whether they’ll use an opener again for Brayan Bello’s next start, Tracy said. The right-hander allowed one run over seven innings after coming out of the bullpen following lefty opener Jovani Moran last time out, a significant improvement after Bello failed to finish the fourth inning in his prior two starts. … Tracy said right-hander Justin Slaten (right oblique strain) came out of his latest rehab outing feeling good and they’ll determine his next steps in the coming days. … Newly called up bench player Mickey Gasper will not be a candidate to play the outfield, Tracy said, and if the Red Sox need someone to play out there in a pinch Andruw Monasterio will be the first option.

While Sonny Gray was able to return after the minimum amount of time on the injured list and…

[2389
7583,42,5,48,5172,15690,922,139,54,3211,1093,3212,4,90,89
0":"post-693008","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-houston-astros","8":"tag-andruw-monasterio","9":"tag-astros","10":"tag-baseball","11":"tag-boston-red-sox","12":"tag-brayan-bello","13":"tag-chad-tracy","14":"tag-garrett-crochet","15":"tag-houston","16":"tag-houston-astros","17":"tag-houstonastros","18":"tag-justin-slaten","19":"tag-mickey-gasper","20":"tag-mlb","21":"tag-ranger-suarez","22":"tag-red-sox
["GET
