Sachse had just scored its first run off an error and had two runners on with no outs. The next at-bat, Sachse’s Aaron Silva drilled a line drive to right field and should’ve scored the team’s second run. But Waxahachie’s Luke Ballard one-hopped the throw all the way to catcher Jax Robinson to make the tag at the plate.

The next at-bat, Robinson, a Texas-commit, caught a runner stealing second and then pitcher Gramm Davis struck out the third. Waxahachie held Sachse scoreless the rest of the game.

“Our catcher is a four-year starter, and we got some guys who have started all year, last year and this year,” Waxahachie head coach Jesse Lopez said. “We practice it, and we hope it works out that way and it did. We haven’t really got to see that a whole lot, so it was good. It was real good, I was pleased with it.”

At the plate in the bottom of the fourth, Waxahachie flawlessly executed a double steal after Kayson Weyrauch was walked and casually strolled on to second after the pitcher turned his back.

Weston Davis bolted home from third as soon as Sachse pitcher, Alex Moreno, turned his head toward Weyrauch. Davis had batted in a run during his at-bat earlier in the inning.

“We have some speed,” Lopez said. “We want to put some pressure on people, and that’s the thing we kind of hang our hat on, making them make a mistake, and it just worked out. Sometimes it doesn’t work out, but it worked out tonight, and that’s a good thing.”

The first run of the game was scored by Hayden Zandt in the opening frame. Zandt recorded a sac fly in the bottom of the third to score the team’s second run, and he finished with a team-high two RBIs. Julian Duarte scored on a wild pitch for his team’s third run the same inning.

Robinson had two hits and was intentionally walked twice.

Davis was the night’s winning pitcher throwing six innings with four strikeouts and only allowing three hits. The series returns to Garland on Friday at 7 p.m. for Game 2.

Jesuit 3, Denton Guyer 0

IRVING – There were several spectators interested in what James Jorgensen could do for their futures on Thursday, but the Jesuit senior was focused on the present. That focus may have produced his finest hour as a pitcher for Jesuit.

Jorgensen tossed a three-hit shutout, striking out 12 batters while walking two. Jorgensen also had a nice game at the plate, having a hand in two runs in Jesuit’s 3-0 win over Denton Guyer in Game 1 of a best-of-three Class 6A Division II area playoff series at Ranchview High School’s The Ballpark at Ranchview.

Jorgensen appeared to get stronger as the game went on, recording 10 strikeouts while allowing one walk and one hit in the final five innings. Isaac Calderon was the loan Guyer batter who figured Jorgensen out, hitting two singles

Jorgensen, a University of Texas signee, excelled while at least five scouts were measuring his velocity with radar guns, although it appeared that his change-up was his best pitch.

“Yes. I think today was my best game as a Jesuit Ranger. I came out and threw hard and had good defense. They made contact, but it was soft contact,” Jorgensen said. “I think all pitches for me today were moving. My curveball was really good late in the outing. Also my slider and my fastball up was really good too.

“Whoever is in the stands is not important. I’m focused on winning, on the team and on the playoffs.”

Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at The Ballpark at Ranchview.

Jesuit (27-7-2) – ranked No. 5 in The Dallas Morning News’ Class 6A area poll — took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Taylor Haddock doubled to the wall in left-center and came home on a two-out Jorgensen single to left. The Rangers extended their lead in the third when Roman Derichsweiler singled to right, went to third on a Jorgensen double to left-center and scored on a Nate Iannariello groundout. Iannariello added a double down the right-field line in the sixth and his courtesy runner, Hudson Yobp, would score on a sacrifice bunt by Griffin Civello.

Barrett Elston (5-1) took the loss for No. 9-ranked Guyer (27-10), but had a quality start. Leaning on effective an curveball, Elston had five strikeouts while scattering six hits and three walks.

Haddock and Shane Parker had two hits apiece for Jesuit.

Other area results, all Game 1:

Chisholm Trail 2, Burleson 1

Ennis 10, Sunset 1

Lovejoy 5, Frisco Lone Star 0

McKinney North 7, Frisco 2

Celina 5, Life Waxahachie 0

Rowlett 4, Mesquite Horn 2

Flower Mound 10, South Grand Prairie 0

Burleson Centennial 3, Birdville 0

Hebron 3, Arlington Martin 1

Melissa 6, Highland Park 5

Keller 10, Odessa Permian 2

Sunnyvale 9, Carthage 1

Wolfforth Frenship 6, Byron Nelson 1

Panther Creek 9, Kennedale

Aubrey 5, Godley 4

Rockwall 2, Waco Midway 1

Midlothian Heritage 18, Woodrow Wilson 1

Midland 3, Southlake Carroll 2

Aledo 3, FW Paschal 0

Subscribe

Sign up for the Morning Roundup, a free newsletter delivering the latest North Texas news each morning.

Game of the Night: Waxahachie 5, Sachse 1 WAXAHACHIE – Waxahachie finally got to execute what it practiced.
