The St. John Bosco, La Mirada, Gahr and Long Beach Wilson baseball teams each earned a notable spot in the CIF Southern Section playoff pairings that were released Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The pairings had been scheduled for weeks to be released Saturday morning, but the CIF-SS chose to release them a day early without warning.<\/p>\n

But that issue aside, the teams from the Press-Telegram area were probably happy \u2014 for the most part \u2014 to find out what they face in the postseason.<\/p>\n

St. John Bosco and La Mirada are the only two area teams placed in Division 1, the highest division in the section and considered one of the toughest high school playoff divisions in the nation.<\/p>\n

This year the Division 1 field was reduced to 16 teams and will start with pool play. The teams are divided into four pools and every team is guaranteed at least two games. The top two teams from each pool advance to what the CIF-SS calls the \u201cknockout rounds,\u201d which begin with the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n

The other divisions are 32-team brackets and are single elimination.<\/p>\n

Division 1 teams play their first game in pool play on Tuesday and their second game on Friday, May 15.<\/p>\n

First-round games in Divisions 2, 4, 6 and 8 are Thursday. First-round games in Divisions 3, 5, 7 and 9 are Friday, May 15.<\/p>\n

St. John Bosco is the defending Division 1 champion, went 22-5 during the regular season and won the Trinity League title outright for the second year in a row. But the Braves did not receive one of the top four seeds; those went to Norco (No. 1), Harvard-Westlake (No. 2), Sierra Canyon (No. 3) and Orange Lutheran (No. 4), which finished second in the Trinity League and lost to St. John Bosco in two out of three games in league.<\/p>\n

The Braves begin the playoffs with a home game Tuesday against Cypress (21-7), the Crestview League champion.<\/p>\n

La Mirada (22-6), which finished first in the Gateway League, begins the playoffs on the road against Harvard-Westlake, the Mission League champion.<\/p>\n

Gahr received a top-four seed (No. 4) in the Division 2 bracket. The Gladiators (17-10-1), who finished second in the Gateway League, will be home in the first round Thursday against El Segundo (19-7).<\/p>\n

There are two area teams \u2014 Warren and Millikan \u2014 in Division 3. In the first round, Warren will play at West Ranch and Millikan will be home against South Torrance.<\/p>\n

St. Anthony is in Division 4 and will begin the playoffs Thursday at Glendora.<\/p>\n

If there is a division that stands out in the Press-Telegram area it is likely Division 5, which includes six area teams \u2014 Long Beach Poly, Paramount, Wilson, Valley Christian, Mayfair and Cerritos.<\/p>\n

Wilson is the No. 3 seed in Division 5 after finishing second, behind Millikan, in the Moore League.<\/p>\n

The first-round matchups Friday for those teams: Sunny Hills at Long Beach Poly; Heritage Christian at Paramount; Montebello at Wilson; Culver City at Valley Christian; Mayfair at St. Bonaventure; Bishop Montgomery at Cerritos.<\/p>\n

Two other area teams also received top-four seeds in their division: Norwalk is seeded No. 2 is Division 7; St. Piux-St. Matthias is seeded No. 2 in Division 9.<\/p>\n
