It has not been a good season for the New York Mets<\/a> so far through the first 40 games of their 2026 campaign, as they currently find themselves in last place in the National League East division with a paltry 15-25 record.<\/p>\n

Their most recent setback was a 5-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, during which third baseman Andy Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez committed not one but two costly throwing errors. The second error proved more hurtful to the Mets, as it allowed Ildemaro Vargas to reach base leading off the sixth inning, eventually setting up back-to-back two-out run-scoring hits.<\/p>\n

Manager Carlos Mendoza<\/a>, clearly holding back some frustration, pulled no punches<\/a> when a reporter asked him what he thought of the throwing errors by Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez, noting that in Major League Baseball, those kinds of mistakes just can’t happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are routine plays,\u201d the skipper said via SNY. \u201cAt this level, you expect those plays to be made, it\u2019s as simple as that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez chalked it up to \u201cjust one of those things\u201d afterward in the clubhouse.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stood a little bit wide, and it just got away from me,\u201d Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez said afterward via Yahoo Sports, speaking through an interpreter. \u201cIt\u2019s one of those things where you don\u2019t want it to happen, but it\u2019s baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez, who had played the last several years with the Detroit Tigers organization, was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers on a one-year, $1.2 million contract before being DFA’d; he was claimed by the Athletics, for whom he appeared in 11 games before once again being DFA’d. He was claimed by the Mets<\/a> on April 30.<\/p>\n
