CLEVELAND \u2014\u00a0Patience in the batter\u2019s box<\/a> can lead to big innings and victories on the baseball field.<\/p>\n

The first-place Guardians<\/a> displayed their composure Monday, May 11, when the Los Angeles Angels<\/a> used four pitchers in \u201ca bullpen game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sure, the Guardians<\/a> had seven hits, but the season-high 10 walks that they drew were just as important in a 7-2 win over the Angels at Progressive Field<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s victory came after two one-run losses to the struggling Minnesota Twins<\/a>, 2-1 in 11 innings on May 9<\/a> and 5-4 on May 10<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had some really good at-bats the first couple innings today, and to have big innings is always huge,\u201d said Guardians rookie second baseman Travis Bazzana<\/a>, who hit a two-run double in a five-run third inning. \u201cWe talked about it today, hitting with runners in scoring position. We’ve been getting on base a lot and we just got to continue to have a good plan and find a way to get those knocks when the opportunities come.<\/p>\n

“So, that’s going to be big for us throughout the year, winning a lot of games. It’s going to come down to runners in scoring position, hitting, I think a lot, and in the playoffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Guardians benefitted from Angels pitchers Brent Suter<\/a>, Jose Fermin and Kirby Yates<\/a> not being at their best, and they also won despite Steven Kwan<\/a> going 0-for-3 with two walks and Jose Ramirez<\/a> going 0-for-5.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome days you have success, some days you don’t,\u201d said Bazzana, who also walked twice. \u201cThis is a game of ups and downs and a long season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guardians shortstop Brayan Rocchio<\/a> started the scoring with a single to right field in the second inning that brought in Kyle Manzardo<\/a> and Daniel Schneemann<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think Rocchy\u2019s first hit was the one that kind of was like, \u2018OK, we can take a little breath now,\u2019\u201d Guardians acting manager Tony Arnerich said. \u201cWe talked about it earlier, just having those baserunners and those opportunities and these guys, a lot of young players learning how to compete at this level and to get those opportunities and fail, sometimes you learn a little bit and then come back the next time and get it done.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it was just a matter of time that we were going to start getting hits. We keep putting runners on base and walking like that, you’re going to have some nights where you’re going to get some hits like we did tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Guardians’ five-run third started with a walk to Chase DeLauter<\/a> and a ground out by Ramirez. Rhys Hoskins<\/a>, Manzardo and David Fry<\/a> followed with walks to force in DeLauter. Daniel Schneemann hit a two-run single to right and Bazzana added his two-run double to left-center.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey’re professional at-bats,\u201d Arnerich said of Bazzana. \u201cIt’s a quality at-bat. You can count on him for that, and that’s what’s going to keep him here for sure and he’s going to continue to hit. \u2026 His ability to control the [strike] zone is what elite hitters do, and that’s why it’s so exciting to think about what he could do in this league. He’s doing that at a very young age and very early time in his career to be able to come up here and do that and not get overexcited and try to do too much and want to prove himself with the bat.<\/p>\n

“But, I think he’s proven himself by the quality of his at-bats, and his ability to be disciplined at the plate is probably proving more to a lot of people than he thinks, and that’s how you stay in this league.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rocchio said \u201ctrying to be simple\u201d at the plate is key.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a tough game the last two days and today we came here thinking, ‘be simple,’\u201d Rocchio said. \u201cWe were doing our thing, taking good ABs and putting the ball in play. That\u2019s our identity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The seven runs were more than enough for Guardians left-handed starter Joey Cantillo<\/a>, who struck out four, walked one and allowed five hits over six scoreless innings.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere’s going to be tight games and there’s going to be games where we get up in front like that, and I feel like it’s huge,\u201d Cantillo said. \u201cIt’s good to see the boys do that and the offense flow like that. And, yeah, there’s big pitches. Regardless of the score, you obviously want to stay locked in with everything and stay on the attack.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cantillo (3-1, 2.98 ERA) escaped a jam with runners on second and third and two outs in the sixth when he got Nolan Schanuel<\/a> to tap a ground ball in front of the plate that Fry fielded and threw to first to end the inning.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was as good as you can pitch right there,\u201d Arnerich said. \u201cHe was attacking, minimizing pitches and getting him through six and getting to go through that lineup a third time. We talked about it earlier today, what a great opportunity for him, and he ran into some trouble there in that last inning and Schanuel had two hits off him already. So, it was a big moment for Joey to get him there in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt Festa<\/a>, Colin Holderman<\/a> and Peyton Pallette each pitched an inning in relief as Arnerich earned his first win as acting manager with Stephen Vogt<\/a> sidelined with an illness.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s pretty cool,\u201d Arnerich said of the win.\u201d You think about growing up playing in the big leagues and I guess this is the next best thing is if you can coach in the big leagues and just have the opportunity to manage. Obviously, Vogter being sick isn\u2019t ideal, but at the end of the day the players go play and you sit there and you watch the game, and there’s some decisions to be made, but to be able to do that is cool for me and my family.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re a big baseball family. My grandfather growing up always told me about Joe Sewell, who’s a Cleveland legend, and how much he didn’t strike out. And he would remind us how much big leaguers strike out now. So, you get brought up in this game, and I’d like to think my family, my dad and my grandpa taught me about the history of the game. So to be able to have a night in the dugout where I’m the manager and get a W, yeah, it’s pretty cool.\u201d<\/p>\n

Said Cantillo: \u201cTony’s the man. So, make sure Vogter’s feeling good and get him back in this building soon or whenever that is. But it’s cool to see Tony get his first win. I think everyone loves him.\u201d<\/p>\n
