Paul Skenes<\/a> is truly a special player. The Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> pitcher is the reigning NL Cy Young winner for a reason. His insane arsenal of pitches, combined with his unique blend of command and velocity, makes him arguably the hardest pitcher to face in the majors this year. Against the Colorado Rockies, Skenes was on the verge of making history by getting his first no-hitter.<\/p>\n

Skenes had a no-hitter bid going through 6 1\/3 innings,<\/a> striking out ten batters in the process. In the seventh inning, though, the Pirates star’s no-hit game came to a close after Mickey Moniak hit a ball to left center field. Center fielder O’Neil Cruz, who made a catch around that same area an inning ago, was just a hair late to the ball.<\/p>\n

Skenes would still finish the game without ceding a single run, going eight full innings with 10 Ks. The Pirates star allowed just two hits and put just three runners on base (he recorded a HBP in the fifth inning). After the game, Cruz joked that he’s never run as fast as he did for that catch attempt<\/a>, not even for his kids.<\/p>\n

\u201cI ran so hard, I\u2019ll tell you now that I would not run after my kids like that,\u201d Cruz said, per Dominic Campbell.<\/p>\n

Cruz did his part in the game for the Pirates. He recorded three hits on the night against the Rockies, scoring two runs in the process. The center fielder is also getting better playing in the outfield, making a couple of crucial catches. That includes one catch late in the game that would have likely resulted in a run for Colorado had he missed.<\/p>\n

As for Skenes, the Pirates pitcher continues to be the most impressive pitcher in the league so far. Another scoreless outing keeps Skenes’ ERA below 2.00. Perhaps even more impressively, Skenes has a whopping 0.64 WHIP (walks, hits per inning pitched). His streak of not allowing a walk continued today, proving that his command on the plate is immaculate.<\/p>\n
