Paul Skenes<\/a> may not have thrown a no-hitter on Tuesday, but he still found another way to write his name into the record books.<\/p>\n

The reigning NL Cy Young winner was in top form against the Colorado Rockies<\/a>, firing eight shutout innings in the Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a>‘ 3-1 victory.<\/p>\n

Skenes started the game on fire, striking out the first six batters he faced<\/a>. He struck out the side again in the sixth and did not allow a hit until the seventh when Mickey Moniak<\/a> finally reached him for a one-out single.<\/p>\n

Skenes completed the eighth before turning the game over to Gregory Soto<\/a>, who notched his fourth save of the season despite allowing a run. Skenes finished with 10 strikeouts, a season high for him.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0the Elias Sports Bureau, Skenes became the first Pirates pitcher in the Expansion Era<\/a> (since 1961) to strike out the side at least three times in a game.<\/p>\n

The win improved Skenes’ record to\u00a06-2 and lowered his ERA to 1.98. He’s opened May with\u00a016 straight scoreless innings<\/a> to begin the month and has allowed just six earned runs over his last eight starts combined.<\/p>\n

The two-time All-Star will try to keep rolling in his next scheduled start against the Philadelphia Phillies<\/a> at home on Sunday.<\/p>\n
