(Photo by Luke Hales\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The New York Yankees have hit a bit of a rough patch.<\/p>\n<p>After emerging as the best team in the American League once roughly one-quarter of the season had concluded, the Yankees were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers then lost their series to the Baltimore Orioles. Now they head into a highly anticipated Subway Series with the crosstown rival New York Mets with a bit of a shadow looming over them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo things can be true at the same time: The New York Yankees are one of the best teams in baseball, but a few concerns are starting to arise for a team that had the best record in the American League as recently as last Friday,\u201d as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7277270\/2026\/05\/14\/yankees-concerns-road-trip-standings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7277270\/2026\/05\/14\/yankees-concerns-road-trip-standings\/\" aria-label=\"Chris Kirschner put it for The Athletic\">Chris Kirschner put it for The Athletic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/peterchawaga\/2026\/05\/14\/cubs-former-infielder-leaves-mlb-after-harsh-debut\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Cubs\u2019 Former Infielder Leaves MLB After Harsh Debut\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/peterchawaga\/2026\/05\/14\/cubs-former-infielder-leaves-mlb-after-harsh-debut\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ForbesCubs\u2019 Former Infielder Leaves MLB After Harsh DebutBy Peter Chawaga<\/a>New York Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza Sees Job Status Speculation<\/p>\n<p>But even as the Yankees hit a rough patch, they won\u2019t be as desperate for a series win as the Mets, who have emerged as one of the worst teams in all of baseball following a playoff miss last year and then a roster overhaul in the offseason.<\/p>\n<p>And with a crop of new players and most of the coaching staff replaced after last season\u2019s debacle, plenty of attention has surrounded Mets manager Carlos Mendoza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s heard the rampant speculation about his job status,\u201d ESPN\u2019s Jorge Castillo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/48621951\/carlos-mendoza-energy-mets-not-job-status-amid-struggles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/48621951\/carlos-mendoza-energy-mets-not-job-status-amid-struggles\" aria-label=\"wrote of Mendoza\">wrote of Mendoza<\/a>. \u201cHe knows what happened to Alex Cora and Rob Thomson \u2014 two widely respected managers who were fired \u2026 after their big-market, high-payroll Northeast clubs floundered to start the season \u2014 could happen to him. And he is cognizant that his team must start winning in order for him to avoid joining them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Publicly, at least, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns has defended Mendoza and indicated that the team has no plans to fire him. It\u2019s baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judge has a personal relationship with Mendoza from the Mets\u2019 skipper\u2019s time with the Yankees, where he was a member of the coaching staff between 2009 and 2023.
