On Friday, just a bold white outline of a man in front of a microphone covered the north facade of the Wintrust Building at 731 N. Jefferson St. in Milwaukee. But this outline is just the beginning for Ramirez. “We have this big, white, blank canvas that is going to allow us to do all the details in it. So it’s literally the first phase of the project,” Ramirez said. For a man who was larger than life in Milwaukee, it’s only fitting that Mr. Baseball will be immortalized, towering 100 feet over the city. The photorealistic mural will depict Uecker sitting behind a microphone, reflecting his role as the Brewers’ play-by-play announcer for 54 seasons. Uecker died last year at the age of 90. “His big impact transcended beyond baseball, through a little bit of comedy, through entertainment and stuff,” Ramirez said. “With his passing, I think there was a need to just really show love to his entire legacy, what he left and how he lived his life.” Ramirez, whose work is well known in Milwaukee, has created numerous murals across the city, including the iconic Giannis Antetokounmpo portrait downtown. While Giannis may be taller in real life, Uecker’s mural will be three times the size of the basketball star’s. “I’m just honored to honestly paint one of the biggest portraits in America, let alone him,” Ramirez said. Uecker, remembered for his humor and one-liners, is also celebrated for his memorable calls during games. Ramirez was asked about the possibility of including one of Uecker’s famous quotes in the mural, but remained coy about the details. “You know, I’m not allowed to say that. I would really hope that you guys come check back in to see. You know, there might be a message,” Ramirez said. Ramirez hopes to finish the mural by the beginning of June. A tailgate-themed ribbon-cutting celebration is planned to honor Uecker and Ramirez’s work once the mural is complete.Top headlinesMultiple residents hospitalized in Lac La Belle house fire2 men arrested after carjackings outside Milwaukee-area chicken restaurantsFBI offers $200,000 for ex-Air Force intelligence specialist accused of spying for Iran WATCH Beware of drunk deer, police warn, announcing season of inebriation

      MILWAUKEE —

A 100-foot mural honoring Milwaukee legend Bob Uecker is being painted in downtown Milwaukee by artist Mauricio Ramirez, who aims to celebrate the baseball icon’s lasting impact on the city.

On Friday, just a bold white outline of a man in front of a microphone covered the north facade of the Wintrust Building at 731 N.
