Brunn will be joined on the pitcher’s mound by his grandson, Alex Hill, who shared the significance of the honor for their family. “For Jewish Heritage Night at Camden Yards, for him to get honored in this way is really important for our family as a whole to be able to share how amazing he is,” Hill told WBAL-TV 11 News. Born in Germany, Brunn remembers the oppression Jewish families faced under Adolf Hitler’s regime. “You had no freedom whatsoever, and we, as a Jewish family, were restricted to all kinds of places,” Brunn told WBAL-TV 11 News. He also recalls Kristallnacht, also known as the Night of Broken Glass.”My father, at the same time, was arrested and sent to a concentration camp; 16 days he stayed there,” Brunn told WBAL-TV 11 News. Brunn said his mother bribed the Gestapo to secure his father’s release, and the family fled Germany to settle in Baltimore in 1938. When World War II began, Brunn was drafted into the U.S. Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. “The artillery went around the clock,” Brunn told WBAL-TV 11 News. “I was in the infantry; we were a line company. We were in combat. A number of our people got wounded or killed, and I was lucky enough to survive.”After the war, Brunn earned a degree in chemistry from Johns Hopkins University and worked at the Baltimore Spice Co., founded by his father, which is best known for Old Bay seasoning. Reflecting on his life, Brunn shared a message about perseverance and values, saying: “Take advantage of what opportunities avail themselves, which is what we did, but honesty and hard work seem to pay off.”

      BALTIMORE —

A 101-year-old Holocaust survivor and World War II veteran will throw Tuesday’s first pitch at the Baltimore Orioles game.

This comes as the month of May is celebrated as Jewish American Heritage Month, marking a meaningful moment in Ralph Brunn’s remarkable life.

“To connect it with the Jewish life that exists here and to bring the positive part of this sort of thing into play at the same time, I think, it’s important,” Brunn told WBAL-TV 11 News.

He also recalls Kristallnacht, also known as the Night of Broken Glass.

“My father, at the same time, was arrested and sent to a concentration camp; 16 days he stayed there,” Brunn told WBAL-TV 11 News.

Brunn said his mother bribed the Gestapo to secure his father’s release, and the family fled Germany to settle in Baltimore in 1938.

When World War II began, Brunn was drafted into the U.S. Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

“The artillery went around the clock … I was lucky enough to survive.”

“The artillery went around the clock,” Brunn told WBAL-TV 11 News. “I was in the infantry; we were a line company.
