The Cleveland Guardians<\/a> were hoping they could finally help Tanner Bibee<\/a> earn his first win of the 2026 season as they prepared for their series opener against the Washington Nationals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wins and losses for a pitcher don\u2019t mean nearly as much as they did in the past, but it\u2019s still rare for someone out of the top of the rotation to not have a win on their resume at the end of May. Bibee hasn\u2019t pitched perfectly, but he also hasn\u2019t received any run support from his offense.<\/p>\n

There was plenty of action on Monday evening, but not in the way Cleveland was hoping for, and certainly not in the<\/p>\n

Bibee only lasted 3.0 innings and gave up seven earned runs. The Nationals didn\u2019t just get hits off Cleveland\u2019s starter; they shelled him. Bibee gave up nine hard-hit balls (–), and with that made some unwanted franchise history along the way.<\/p>\n

Of the eight hits Bibee allowed, five of them were home runs off the bats of James Wood, Curtis Mead<\/a>, Jacob Young<\/a>, Luis Garcia, and CJ Abrams<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The five long balls Bibee gave up are tied for the most by a starter in Cleveland history. The other pitchers to have suffered an outing like this were Gary Bell (1962), Luis Tiant (1969), and Hunter Gaddis<\/a> (2022). (Yes, that is the same Hunter Gaddis who is currently a lockdown reliever in Cleveland\u2019s bullpen.)<\/p>\n

After the loss, Bibee didn\u2019t have many words on the loss. \u201cAnything [I say] right now would probably be emotional. There\u2019s nothing I can really say about it,\u201d said the starting pitcher.<\/p>\n

Stephen Vogt<\/a> had a few more words on Bibee\u2019s outing, but the message was the same: it just wasn\u2019t Bibee\u2019s night.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of mistakes over the middle. Didn\u2019t feel like he really had much. The fastball had some life at times, and other times it didn\u2019t,\u201d explained Cleveland\u2019s skipper. \u201cReally, I just thought it was a lack of execution. We really haven\u2019t seen that from Tanner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vogt\u2019s overarching message on the entire game was to flush it and move on to the next one. We\u2019ll see if Cleveland\u2019s offense can do just that on Tuesday, but it will take Tanner almost a week to bounce back on the mound.<\/p>\n
