David Oleson knew there would be days like this.<\/p>\n
He just didn\u2019t think it would be quite this early.<\/p>\n
Nor this bad.<\/p>\n
The West Burlington-Notre Dame softball team managed just one hit, committed four errors and walked four batters in a 12-0, four-inning loss to West Liberty in a non-conference game Tuesday at Barb Carter Field.<\/p>\n
Oleson, who is used to being on the other end of these kind of games, was at a loss for words.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was just one of those night where you walk away and forget it,\u201d Oleson said. \u201cI\u2019ve been preaching that to my pitchers all spring. It\u2019s one pitch. You have to forget and go on to the next pitch.\u201d<\/p>\n
WB-ND starting pitcher Orayana Gonzalez retired the first two batters in the first inning before the floodgates opened. Kiley Collins and Mallory Wulf followed with singles, Molly Garcia and Sulli Bucknell drew walks and Mika Escobedo, Kylee Daufeldt and Jayleen Kivi had consecutive singles.<\/p>\n
Just like that, the Comets had a 6-0 lead and had yet to take the field.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis snowballed,\u201d Oleson saqid. \u201cWe had one issued and it just snowballed into a whole bunch of issues in that first inning. We had two outs and runners at first and second. The next thing we know it\u2019s 6-0.\u201d<\/p>\n
Whitney Snowden drew a walk to open the bottom of the frame for the Falcons. Paige Kramer hit into a fielder\u2019s choice, but Maddie Thomas and Tannisyn Christofferson were retired to end the inning.<\/p>\n
West Liberty tacked on six more runs in the second inning. The key blow was a towering three-run home run down the left-field line by Garcia.<\/p>\n
Three WB-ND errors led to three more runs.<\/p>\n
West Liberty pounded out 12 hits in four innings.<\/p>\n
West Burlington-Notre Dame\u2019s lone hit came with one out in the third inning when Addy Mundth beat out an infield single.<\/p>\n
Oleson had a short meeting with the team after the game and told them to put the loss behind them and move forward.<\/p>\n
\u201cI told the girls to forget it because it\u2019s just one loss on the year. We still have a lot more games to play,\u201d Oleson said. \u201cI could stand out here and holler and yell, but what good would that do? They\u2019ll be down enough already. They know how they played. They didn\u2019t need to be reminded by me. We\u2019re learning.\u201d<\/p>\n
WB-ND (1-2) opens SEI Super Conference South Division play Thursday. The Falcons travel to play New London\/Winfield-Mount Union at 7 p.m. Thursday at New London, then host Van Buren County at 7 p.m. Friday at Barb Carter Field.<\/p>\n
