{"id":714251,"date":"2026-06-01T05:33:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T05:33:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/714251\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T05:33:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T05:33:17","slug":"will-warren-found-creative-way-to-stay-loose-as-yankees-poured-on-runs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/714251\/","title":{"rendered":"Will Warren found creative way to stay loose as Yankees poured on runs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. \u2014 Having 43 minutes to sit in the dugout between pitches is not ideal, but Will Warren surely did not mind, given the reason for the long wait.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that it came at Sutter Health Park, where there is no access to the clubhouse or any facilities underneath from the dugouts, made it all the more unique.<\/p>\n<p>But the Yankees right-hander just had to get creative as he watched his offense explode for a 13-run top of the third inning Sunday afternoon, then got back to business <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/05\/31\/sports\/yankees-erupt-for-wild-13-run-third-inning-that-lasts-43-minutes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on the way to a 13-8 win.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Warren, who made his way out to the bullpen during the offensive onslaught to throw some pitches and stay loose after the A\u2019s second pitching change, put up an important zero in the bottom of the third to keep a 13-3 lead intact. <\/p>\n<p>He then went on to toss six strong innings in which he only gave up three runs, all of them unearned and all of them coming in the bottom of the first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had the big lead, and I don\u2019t know if I was exactly myself,\u201d Warren said of a bottom of the third in which he gave up a pair of singles but stranded both runners. \u201cI think I could have stepped on their throat when we wanted to. Coming back in the dugout [after the bottom of the third], [manager Aaron Boone] and I had that talk. AP Photo\/Scott Marshall<\/p>\n<p>Warren had been throwing weighted balls in the small dugout early on during the Yankees\u2019 wild inning, in which they sent 18 batters to the plate.<\/p>\n<p>But as each passing teammate got on base, Warren began to realize he may need to do more to keep moving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard him kind of asking and maybe freaking out about how he was going to stay warm,\u201d Anthony Volpe said with a smile.<\/p>\n<p>So during the A\u2019s second pitching change, Warren jogged out to the bullpen and threw about seven pitches, then ran to the mound from there to start the bottom of the third in a bizarre scene.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:0.66601563;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39543438\" width=\"393\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/new-york-yankees-starting-pitcher-129346025.jpg\" alt=\"New York Yankees pitcher Will Warren looks up as he walks off the field.\" class=\"wp-image-39543438\"  \/>Yankees starting pitcher Will Warren (29) looks skyward as he <br \/>walks off the field May 31. D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWill did a good job of settling in, dealing with that long third inning,\u201d Boone said. \u201cWhen do you see a starting pitcher go down to the bullpen? I mean, it got that long.
