This article was written before lineups were announced.

Make your DraftKings MLB DFS picks here: MLB $200K Hidden Ball Trick [$50K to 1st]

PITCHER

Stud

Davis Martin, Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins ($9,700) — Prior to this season, Martin had a FIP over 4.00 in three seasons with a K-BB% in the 10% area. Through 67.2 innings this season, the FIP is 2.31 while the K-BB% is 21.7%. And it’s all been legit, as the BABIP is .291. The big change has been pitch mix, as he’s throwing the fastball less often while increasing the sinker and curveball usage. Martin has put up double-digit FPTS in every start this season with eight over 20 and a high of 36.8 FPTS. Minnesota is seventh in strikeout rate.

Value

Grayson Rodriguez, Los Angeles Angels vs. Colorado Rockies ($6,500) — The surface stats look gross for Rodriguez with a 7.53 ERA and 12.3% walk rate. The average exit velocity is 91.6 mph with an 18.5 degree launch angle. That said, the FIP is much lower at 4.61, the BABIP is an elevated .341 and the strand rate is only 56.6%. His first start was against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he only lasted 3.2 innings while giving up seven earned runs. His next outing was better, going 5.2 innings and allowing four earned runs. In his most recent outing, he went five innings and allowed only one earned run. The trend looks to be our friend. Now, he faces a Rockies team that is inept away from Coors Field, is third in strikeout rate and dead-last in wRC+.

INFIELD

Stud

Nick Kurtz, Athletics at Chicago Cubs ($5,400) — Kurtz has 10 home runs, 39 runs, 41 RBI and six stolen bases in 264 plate appearances. The walk rate is a robust 20.5% but the strikeout rate is 29.2%. The .288 batting average is fueled by a .413 BABIP and the ISO is .212. That’s a solid number, but he was at .329 last season, so we haven’t seen the best of Kurtz yet. The average exit velocity is 94.2 mph, his barrel rate is 18.3% and the bat speed is 78 mph, which is in the 99th percentile. Against right-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 175 while the ISO is .232. Jameson Taillon has a 7.77 FIP and 8.6% K-BB% against lefties. 11 of the 19 home runs allowed have come off the bat of a lefty.

Value

Donovan Walton, Los Angeles Angels vs. Colorado Rockies ($2,400) — Walton was called up after Yoan Moncada went on the injured list. He’s had 27 plate appearances and is slashing .308/.333/.385. It’s been fueled by a .400 BABIP and the ISO is only .077. The walk rate is only 3.7% but the strikeout rate is a respectable 22.2%. Against right-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 139, albeit in a small sample size of 23 plate appearances. It’s not a sexy profile but he has put up at least two FPTS in seven of eight games with two of those over 10 FPTS. Now he faces Tomoyuki Sugano, who has a 6.61 FIP and 5.8% K-BB% against lefties.

OUTFIELD

Stud

Ryan O’Hearn, Pittsburgh Pirates at Houston Astros ($4,600) — O’Hearn is slashing .294/.371/.479 with a .184 ISO and .329 BABIP. The walk rate is 10.2% while the strikeout rate is only 18.8%. He has eight home runs, 28 runs, 30 RBI and a stolen base in 186 plate appearances. Against right-handed pitching, the wRC+ is 155 while the ISO is .216. Seven of the eight home runs have come off a righty. Mike Burrows has struggled with lefties this season, allowing a 6.50 FIP and 5.8% K-BB%. Nine of the 13 home runs allowed have come off the bat of a lefty.

Value

Lane Thomas, Kansas City Royals at Cincinnati Reds ($2,200) — Thomas only has one home run, eight runs, 10 RBI and three stolen bases in 125 plate appearances. He’s terrible against righties but not bad against lefties. The ISO is only .106, but the wRC+ is 125 and he hit his only home run off a lefty. The sprint speed of 29 ft/sec is legit and in the 92nd percentile and he often bats leadoff against lefties.

Stan Son gives his top studs and value plays for Tuesday’s 11-game fantasy baseball slate on DraftKings.
