At the start of the year, the Miami Marlins<\/a> were seen as having one of the strongest young rotations in MLB<\/a>. Now, just three months into the season, their two top pitching prospects are likely out for the year due to injury.<\/p>\n

On Friday, the Marlins announced that the organization’s top prospect<\/a>, Thomas White, will be sidelined with a left shoulder capsular injury that he sustained last month. The timeline for recovery is 12-16 months, putting the rest of White’s 2026 season in doubt.<\/p>\n

It’s been a rough year for White, who started the year on the injured list with a Grade 1 oblique strain during Spring Training. White returned to action with rehab games at Single-A Jupiter and was quickly promoted to the team’s top affiliate at Triple-A Jacksonville.<\/p>\n

White was considered a top option to be called up to the big league club when fellow top prospect Robby Snelling<\/a> underwent Tommy John Surgery last month. With both southpaws likely out for the year, the Marlins are down their top two prospects according to MLB Pipeline. Right-handed starters Janson Junk<\/a> and Eury Perez<\/a> are also both on the IL with respective leg injuries.<\/p>\n

White’s injury-riddled season has led to some underwhelming numbers for the Jumbo Shrimp. In five starts at Triple-A, White has a 0-1 record with a 4.34 ERA and 1.446 WHIP in 18.2 innings of work. He has struck out 25 batters, walked nine, and allowed three home runs on 18 hits.<\/p>\n

The imminent arrivals of White and Snelling were reason enough for the Marlins to deal Edward Cabrera<\/a> to the Chicago Cubs<\/a> this offseason. With Sandy Alcantara<\/a>‘s name already swirling in trade rumours, it is almost a certainty that White will be on the Marlins’ roster in 2027, with Snelling joining him around the All-Star break when he returns from his torn UCL.<\/p>\n

Even if White can return this year in late-August or early-September, it is unlikely the Marlins will bring him up for his MLB debut. Miami is currently second-last in the NL East division and five games back of the final NL Wild Card spot. Unless there is a dramatic turnaround, expect Miami to be a seller again at this year’s trade deadline, as they look ahead to a younger starting rotation in 2027.<\/p>\n
