He cleared waivers and was sent outright to Triple-A, but rejected the assignment in favor of free agency. According to Ari Alexander of 7News Boston WHDH, Porter agreed to a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Angels.

There has been a pipeline from the Giants to the Angels in recent years. Porter joins a growing group of players to appear for both organizations. Porter, Wade Meckler, Joey Lucchesi, Jorge Soler, LaMonte Wade Jr., and Shaun Anderson are some recent examples.

There is an obvious connection between the two organizations. The general managers for both clubs are brothers. Zack Minasian is the general manager for the Giants, whereas Perry Minasian oversees the Angels’ front office.

There is another weird, current connection between both teams. The Angels and Giants have some of the worst records in baseball at the moment. Neither team boasts an unusually powerful lineup, but the Giants (six) and Angels (five) lead baseball in grand slams.

Porter departs organization after SF Giants bolstered catching depth in the upper minors

There is rarely continuity for veteran minor leaguers with organizations, but Porter has appeared with the Giants organization in parts of the past three seasons. He re-signed with the club in the offseason. This included a camp invite.

Porter is a multi-positional catcher. He can catch as an emergency option, but he has experience at first base as well. The Giants added him to the 40-man roster in May, but he only got into one game as a pinch runner. They put him on waivers at the beginning of June to make room for Buddy Kennedy and Wilkin Ramos.

With the Sacramento River Cats, Porter put up a .654 OPS with one home run and 10 RBI in 65 plate appearances. He saw the bulk of his time behind the plate. However, the Giants recently moved Drew Cavanaugh up to Triple-A and optioned Jesús Rodríguez back to Triple-A. Cavanaugh is a reliable backstop, and the Giants are still motivated to get Rodríguez stretched out behind the plate.

That would leave little playing time for someone like Porter, so he looked elsewhere. The Angels have a struggling Logan O’Hoppe as their everyday catcher, but there are plenty of reps available behind him.

Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow

Logan Porter was designated for assignment earlier this week.
