ST. MARYS \u2014 The Clearfield Junior American Legion baseball team used patience at the plate coupled with a couple big hits to help create a pair of three-run innings Saturday to capture a 7-3 victory against St. Marys at Berwind Park in Elk\/McKean League action.<\/p>\n
The damage could have been much worse for the home team, as St. Marys pitchers issued 12 walks while committing four errors on defense. However, a pair of three-run innings in the second and third by the visiting Eagles proved to be enough thanks to strong pitching from the duo of Landon Brady and Jake Bloom.<\/p>\n
St. Marys actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the first off Brady when Benny Mecca scored on a two-out error.<\/p>\n
However, the Eagles answered right back with a three-run second.<\/p>\n
Clearfield quickly tied the game when Cooper Stone drew a leadoff walk, was bunted to second by Gerald Shipley \u2014 a play that saw both runners reach safely \u2014 and scored on a Gunnar Duckett groundout.<\/p>\n
After a strikeout, Brady reached on a two-out error that allowed Shipley to score before Bloom doubled home Brady to make it a 3-1 game.<\/p>\n
Brady responded with a 1-2-3 bottom of the second, then Clearfield added to its lead with another three-run inning in the third.<\/p>\n
Phoenix Spaid and Stone drew back-to-back walks to start the inning, but both were throw out at home with Shipley batting \u2014 Spaid on a double-steal attempt and Stone trying to score on a wild pitch.<\/p>\n
Just when it looked like St. Marys might enjoy a quick inning, Shipley drew a two-out walk and promptly scored on a a Duckett double to center. Jayce Brothers then reached on an error that allowed Duckett to score.<\/p>\n
Brady was hit by a pitch to keep the inning going before Bloom capped the big three-run, two-out rally with a single to center that plated Brothers to put the Eagles up 6-1.<\/p>\n
That proved to be all the offense Clearfield needed, but the Eagles did tack on a seventh run in the fourth when Duckett singled home Stone, who had reached on an error with two outs.<\/p>\n
Duckett went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Eagles\u2019 attrack, while Bloom was 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs.<\/p>\n
Brady tossed six innings to get the win, allowing three runs, one earned, on 10 hits. He struck out six and walked none.<\/p>\n
Bloom tossed a scoreless seventh to finish off the win, needing just three pitches to do so even though St. Marys got a leadoff single. That\u2019s because Bloom promptly got a double play ball and a groundout to end the game.<\/p>\n
Clearfield (4-1) is back in action today at home against Warren.<\/p>\n
