They got more power with three home runs and allowed just one run for the second consecutive game to secure the victory.

Chicago started things off with a bang when Pete Crow-Armstrong took Trevor McDonald deep for an opposite-field solo shot on the first pitch of the night. They would add on in the 3rd with an RBI single by Seiya Suzuki, followed by Michael Busch stealing home on a bizarre play where catcher Eric Haase threw to no one at second base when Ian Happ attempted to steal with men at the corners.

Ben Brown pitched around a lot of traffic on the bases, but only gave up a single run on a triple by Luis Arraez in the bottom of the 3rd. The North Siders got that tally right back on a bases-loaded walk by Busch in the top of the 4th to bring the lead to 4-1.

The Cubs hit a pair of homers off left-handed reliever Reiver Sanmartin in the 5th. Happ went out to left, and then Pedro Ramírez hit his first career dinger to dead center to make it a 6-1 score. There was very little excitement after that and the road team would win by the same margin. (Box score)

Key Moment

Brown stranded four runners on base in the 3rd and 4th innings to keep Chicago in front.

Why the Cubs Won

They hit for power with seven extra-base knocks and the entire pitching staff did a good job.

Stats That Matter

Brown was not as sharp as his recent outings but the results were great: 5 IP, 1 R, 7 H, 3 K, and 3 BB.
Suzuki singled and doubled before unfortunately being forced to leave the game with knee discomfort after attempting to make a catch in the 5th.
PCA ended up a triple short of the cycle.
Ramirez also had a double and might start to earn more playing time.

Bottom Line

After playing badly for so long, the Cubs look more like the team from April the past three games. It is too small a sample size to know if this is the start of a hot streak, but just getting a brief respite from the struggles is nice. Things might get more interesting if they can complete a sweep of San Francisco.

On Deck

Chicago makes the attempt to break out the brooms Sunday afternoon at 2:10pm CT. Colin Rea is on the hill against Logan Webb in a matchup broadcast exclusively on ABC, with a radio feed available on The Score.

The Cubs did something Saturday that they have not done since May 7, as they beat the Giants…

[2399
5,734,138,24,4245,161,4,45122,35,105
post-725758","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-chicago-cubs","tag-baseball","tag-ben-brown","tag-chicago","tag-chicago-cubs","tag-chicagocubs","tag-cubs","tag-mlb","tag-pedro-ramirez","tag-pete-crow-armstrong","tag-seiya-suzuki
["GET
