PHILIPSBURG — Coming off a big win against Blanchard on Sunday, the Spike Island Pirates won their eighth game in a row Tuesday with a 13-3, 5-inning victory visiting Baseball U at the Don Womer Baseball Complex.

Baseball U actually jumped out a 1-0 lead after one inning, then went up 3-0 with a pair of runs in the third. However, it was all Spike Island from there as the Pirates exploded for five runs in the bottom half of the third and matched that number in the fourth before ending the game early in walk-off fashion with three final runs in the fifth.

The Pirates’ McGwire Heverly was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to force home Jeremy Beals with the game-ending run.

Nate Gustkey led the Spike Island offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs. Denny Prestash and Connor Guenot each went 2-for-2 in the win. Prestash had a double, RBI and two runs scored, while Guenot ripped a RBI triple and scored once.

Zack Tiracorda went the distance to get the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits while striking out nine and walking one. He also helped his own cause with a hit and two runs scored.
