The club’s decision makers had a different plan.

It will now put baseball’s best rotation to its first significant test of the regular season.

The Rangers placed Eovaldi, who exited his most recent start with triceps tightness, on the 15-day injured list right posterior elbow inflammation before Sunday’s 8-1 win vs. the St. Louis Cardinals at Globe Life Field. He will be eligible to return June 13 and, according to president of baseball operations Chris Young, is not expected to need more time on the injured list than the minimum required.

It’s an act of patience, not panic, but it will leave the backbone unit of this Rangers’ team without its ace as the club embarks on a nine-game road trip at a pivotal point of the season. The Rangers believe they have the bodies — specifically, the quality bodies — to withstand it.

Rangers

Be the smartest Rangers fan. He said Sunday morning that his arm felt good and that he was “hoping” to pitch in this week’s series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said soon after that Eovaldi could start “possibly even Thursday” against the Rays.

The Rangers instead chose the cautious path, shelved Eovaldi, selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Codi Heuer from Triple-A Round Rock and designated catcher Tucker Barnhart for assignment to make the moves fit.

Kumar Rocker — who’s been sidelined since May 23 with a shoulder impingement — is expected to be activated off of the injured list and start Wednesday for the Rangers. Tyler Mahle will pitch Tuesday in Eovaldi’s place and Jack Leiter will start Thursday’s series finale.

Young said Sunday morning that there is nothing structurally wrong with Eovaldi’s arm, but given the flexibility that the Rangers’ rotation currently offers, they want to give the 34-year-old ample time to heal.

“It just felt like this was the appropriate thing,” Young said. “To make sure he gets 100% right.”

The Rangers need that long term more than they’d need the two-to-three starts he’ll now miss. The quintet of Eovaldi, Jacob deGrom, Tyler Mahle, Jack Leiter and Patrick Corbin has anchored a rotation that owns a league-best 2.80 ERA and has allowed three or fewer earned runs in 22 consecutive games. The rotation has, by no exaggeration, been the exclusive reason that the Rangers are only two games under .500 and just three-and-a-half games back of first place in the American League West.

They are 21-3 in games in which they score at least four runs. No other team in baseball has a better win percentage (.875%) than the Rangers do in those instances. Consider the inverse figure, in which the Rangers have the second-worst win percentage in games that they allow two or fewer runs, to best grasp the stark differences between this team’s pitchers and hitters.

That’s why the Rangers will continue to tread carefully with the singular best position group that their club currently offers. Eovaldi, who was on pace to pitch the second-most innings of his career, has twice undergone Tommy John surgery and has missed time because of his elbow, shoulder, back, calf, groin and forearm since the 2019 season. He is incredibly in tune with his own body but must still be handled with care if the Rangers hope to play meaningful baseball late this season.

Ditto for deGrom. The Rangers lifted him after just 81 pitches for the second consecutive start Sunday after he’d thrown six innings of one-run ball. He’s pitched an effective 69 1/3 innings in his first full season since he underwent elbow surgery midway through 2023. That’s the second-most he’s thrown since the 2019 season and it has him on pace to clear the 170-inning threshold for the first time since that year too.

He allowed the Cardinals’ lone run on two singles and a walk in the first inning. A congregation of Rangers officials that included manager Bruce Bochy and head trainer Matt Lucero visited deGrom on the mound after he walked Lars Nootbar to lead off the game on five pitches that weren’t all that close to the strike zone. DeGrom, surprised at the visit, said that he “kept yanking everything” and forced himself to “stop thinking about mechanics” in his final five innings.

“You go two years without pitching, you’re trying to get everything right,” deGrom said. “Before, it was like, ‘This is what I’ve got today.’ I need to go back to that.”

Not that his 2.34 ERA suggests that anything should be different, but, the two-time Cy Young award winner has lofty standards for himself. The entire rotation does now has some for itself, too, and Rocker is again in line to help uphold them.

The 25-year-old had a 8.10 ERA in his first five big league starts this season and never quite worked himself into a rhythm. His most-recent minor league rehab start, which included four-no hit innings and his liveliest fastball yet at Triple-A Round Rock, was the most in sync that he’d felt all year.

“My body being connected to the results was good,” Rocker said Sunday morning. “Compared to earlier this year when I was getting results but still didn’t feel all there. That’s part of it, and it was a big step.”

He’ll now take another back into the Rangers’ rotation.

He has big shoes to fill, and for the sake of what’s kept this team afloat, a significant responsibility to uphold.

Twitter: @McFarland_Shawn

Photos: Rangers leave Cardinals ‘All Shook Up’
