{"id":733865,"date":"2026-06-23T23:51:17","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T23:51:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/733865\/"},"modified":"2026-06-23T23:51:17","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T23:51:17","slug":"chicago-white-sox-of-braden-montgomery-continues-settling-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/733865\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicago White Sox OF Braden Montgomery continues settling in"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday\u2019s second-inning at-bat provided excellent insight into Chicago White Sox rookie outfielder Braden Montgomery\u2019s approach at the plate.<\/p>\n<p>The switch-hitter, batting from the left side, squared off against Cleveland Guardians starter Gavin Williams with a runner on first base and two outs in a scoreless game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe guy\u2019s got a powerful fastball, he\u2019s a powerful arm,\u201d Montgomery said after the game. \u201cYou always want to be ready for the heater.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery swung and missed on the first pitch, a 98.3 mph two-seam fastball.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like that first pitch he threw was a really good heater,\u201d Montgomery said. \u201cI\u2019m late on it, so knowing that, I know there\u2019s a chance I\u2019m going to get another one. And so I\u2019m dang sure I\u2019m not going to miss the next one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next pitch was a 98.5 mph four-seam fastball in the upper part of the strike zone. Montgomery displayed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/video\/gavin-williams-in-play-run-s-to-braden-montgomery?q=Braden%20Montgomery&amp;cp=CMS_FIRST&amp;qt=FREETEXT&amp;p=0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nice piece of hitting<\/a>, driving the ball to left field for a run-scoring double.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"White Sox right fielder Braden Montgomery (24) slides into second base after hitting a double during the seventh inning against the Guardians at Rate Field Monday June 22, 2026 in Chicago. Sanchez\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got something over the plate and did something positive with it and was excited to be able to make that happen,\u201d Montgomery said.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first of two doubles on Monday for Montgomery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/06\/22\/chicago-white-sox-guardians-first-place\/?utm_campaign=mrf-bluesky-chicagotribune.com&amp;utm_source=bluesky&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;mrfcid=202606236a37d241c92c3e13d983978f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the 6-5 victory<\/a> at Rate Field. Montgomery went 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk.<\/p>\n<p>He entered Tuesday\u2019s game against the Guardians with five hits in his last 10 at-bats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the first couple of games (in the major leagues) were so good for Braden, they started attacking with the fastballs,\u201d manager Will Venable said on Monday. \u201cAnd he\u2019s made a really good adjustment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery had four hits in his first two big-league games, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/06\/09\/chicago-white-sox-atlanta-braves-braden-montgomery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">walk-off two-run home run<\/a> in the ninth inning of his debut on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/06\/09\/chicago-white-sox-call-up-braden-montgomery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">June 9 against the Atlanta Braves<\/a>. He was 2-for-23 over the next seven games. He\u2019s rebounded with the five hits in the last three games.<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery came into Tuesday slashing .262\/.311\/.452 with five doubles, one home run, five RBIs and seven runs in 12 games. He\u2019s had four multi-hit games.<\/p>\n<p>A big moment on Monday came when he showed patience in the ninth inning. The Sox were on the ropes after giving up the lead in the top of the ninth. Trailing by a run with one out, Montgomery faced Guardians closer Cade Smith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother power arm,\u201d Montgomery said. \u201cGive yourself the best chance to be successful. Breathe. Sanchez\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s got some really powerful pitches,\u201d Montgomery said. \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be able to lay off the splitter down, heater up, and then you\u2019ve got to be able to get a good swing off on time once he comes to see you because he\u2019s got power stuff.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s kind of the mindset. Let\u2019s get something to deal with and not expand to help him out. With power stuff like that, any time you\u2019re leaving the zone that puts you in that much more of a hole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Representing the tying run, Montgomery quickly advanced to third on Tristan Peters\u2019 check-swing double. Both Montgomery and Peters scored on Sam Antonacci\u2019s two-out, game-winning single to center field.<\/p>\n<p>It was the sixth walk-off victory of the season for the Sox, tied with the Seattle Mariners for the most in the American League.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s falling back on your preparation,\u201d Montgomery said of the team\u2019s late-inning performances. \u201cYou have done your best to give yourself the best chance at success in moments like those. You don\u2019t panic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe play a lot of games. You either execute or you don\u2019t.
