With thousands of extra visitors heading into the city, local drivers and event-goers need to prepare for a heavily congested commute.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) representative Eric Hanson outlines exactly what travelers should expect on the freeways and local streets during this high-traffic stretch.

The Perfect Storm: Summerfest and the Cubs at American Family Field

“We have Summerfest that overlaps the Brewers and Cubs series weekend this weekend,” Hanson says, warning drivers that a massive wave of traffic is on the horizon.

To keep things moving safely during peak exodus times, WisDOT is coordinating freeway lane and ramp closures directly around the events. Hanson explains that these closures are strictly timed: they are scheduled to begin no earlier than one hour after Summerfest closes, and four hours after the first pitch of the Brewers games.

The clear message for the weekend is for everyone to remain patient and drive safely on the crowded roads.

Pro Tip for Fans: Hanson urges attendees to plan ahead and give themselves extra time. For those heading to American Family Field, he notes that brewers.com/traffic has up-to-date resources provided directly by the team.

Protecting pedestrians on I-94 alternate routes

It isn’t just about the major freeways; WisDOT is also focusing heavily on local streets. Hanson shares that new safety enhancements are currently being installed along key pedestrian routes surrounding the I-94 East-West corridor.

“We’re improving some pavement markings there to help make it safer and easier for people that are walking around the 94 East West diversion routes,” Hanson says.

The safety upgrades target several prominent locations:

Blue Mound Road

Wisconsin Avenue

Main Street

General Mitchell Boulevard

The 25th Street and Canal Roundabout

Work on these crosswalk enhancements and added signage began this week and is scheduled to wrap up by the end of July. For commuters worried about daytime delays, Hanson clarifies that most of the pavement marking work occurs overnight with a few lane closures. Signage work may take place during the day but will mostly be limited to minor shoulder closures.

As for the rest of the major system? Hanson notes things are “pretty static”. Weekend closures on the Mitchell Interchange have officially wrapped up, and the ongoing I-43 construction is currently locked into a set configuration that will remain in place for the next few months.

For more information on all of the projects around the area, click here.

Milwaukee is bracing for a massive weekend of entertainment as Summerfest overlaps with a highly anticipated Brewers vs.…

[2401
5,136,8666,81238,81239,843,59,4280,4,91577,1519
post-735990","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-milwaukee-brewers","tag-baseball","tag-brewers","tag-construction","tag-i-94-construction","tag-i-94-east-west-project","tag-milwaukee","tag-milwaukee-brewers","tag-milwaukeebrewers","tag-mlb","tag-summerfest-2026","tag-wisconsin
["GET
