Luis Campusano<\/a> \u2013 2-for-2, Home Run, Two RBI<\/p>\n

Sean Boyle<\/a> \u2013 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 0 BB, 4 K (76 pitches \u2013 53 strikes)<\/p>\n

Sean Boyle stepped into the Chihuahuas rotation for a second straight turn instead of JP Sears<\/a>, but the results were not as strong as his last start. Boyle allowed six runs on nine hits over five innings, striking out four. Boyle lived in the zone throughout, but allowed eight barrels on 19 balls in play. German Marquez<\/a> appeared in relief, likely due to the Padres\u2019 roster needs, allowing three runs in two-thirds of an inning. While Marquez\u2019s fastball touched as high as 96.6 mph, the fastball saw two of three balls in play come off the bat over 95 mph. The velocity could be irrelevant if the ball is coming off the bat harder than the pitch is going in. Misael Tamarez<\/a> allowed one run on two hits in 1.2 innings of relief, walking three batters. Justin Yeager<\/a> retired all five batters he faced, pitching 1.2 scoreless frames.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Luis Campusano made his return to game action, going 2-for-2 with El Paso. Campusano played six innings defensively and at the plate launched his 100th career professional home run. Campusano\u2019s swing looks unchanged from his major league playing time this season, and if he continues to progress well, he could be back with the Padres before the All-Star break. Romeo Sanabria<\/a> went hitless, but hit the second-hardest exit velocity in all of Triple-A baseball with his eighth-inning grounder that led to a fielding error; the ball came off the bat at 110.1 mph. Anthony Vilar doubled and drove in two runs in relief of Campusano, as his seventh-inning double just missed going over the fence by about six feet. Clay Dungan<\/a> hit two singles and drove in a run, while Bryce Johnson<\/a> had three singles and scored a run.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Left-hander Jagger Haynes continues to shine in his second full season with the Missions, as the southpaw pitched into the seventh inning. Haynes threw 6.2 innings of two-run baseball against the Sod Poodles, striking out four batters. The Missions\u2019 starter allowed just four hits on the evening, with seven outs coming on the ground. Haynes has not allowed a home run in four of his last five starts, and pitched to a 3.56 ERA in June despite a 23:13 K: BB ratio across 30.1 innings. Francis Pena<\/a> threw 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, and while he did not pick up a strikeout, Pena extinguished a seventh-inning threat. Josh Mallitz<\/a> pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the win, striking out two batters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

San Antonio saw the return of Ethan Salas<\/a>, who was activated off the 7-day injured list. Salas missed nine days due to a minor oblique injury, but held his own behind the plate in his return. Salas did not exit early, playing all nine innings in the Missions\u2019 win. Jake Cunningham scored four of the Missions\u2019 six runs, finishing with two hits. Cunningham hit his first home run in front of the crowds at The Wolff, his 17th on the year, between two levels. The 23-year old has not missed a beat since making the jump from High-A. Albert Fabian finished with three hits, driving in four runs. Fabian was a triple shy of the cycle; he hit a two-run single in the second inning to score Braedon Karpathios<\/a> and Jake Cunningham, and launched his sixth home run of the season in the fourth inning. Fabian doubled in the home half of the sixth inning, scoring Cunningham once more. Braedon Karpathios went 1-for-4 with a single and a run scored, picking up an outfield assist defensively.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In roster news, right-hander Garrett Hawkins<\/a> was assigned to Double-A San Antonio, with Brendan Durfee<\/a> going on the development list. Hawkins has not pitched since June and has been on the temporarily inactive list since June 20. In other moves, left-hander Omar Cruz<\/a> was placed on the 7-day injured list.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The TinCaps\u2019 bullpen allowed ten unanswered runs in a loss to Great Lakes on Tuesday. Matthew Watson started the game, pitching 2.2 innings of two-run baseball. Only one of two runs allowed by Watson was earned, with only 50% of his pitches going for strikes. Watson labored in a two-run first inning, but threw a pair of wild pitches. Nick Falter<\/a> entered in the third inning with two outs and the bases loaded, striking out Eduardo Guerrero<\/a> to strand the bases loaded. Falter allowed two runs (one earned) in 2.1 innings, with a throwing error from Rosman Verdugo<\/a> allowing the go-ahead run to score. CJ Widger allowed a two-run home run in one inning of work. Braian Salazar<\/a> allowed five runs in one-third of an inning, including a grand slam to Eduardo Quintero<\/a>. Will Varmette<\/a> struck out three in 1.2 innings of relief, allowing a two-out RBI single in the eighth. The 23-year old has not issued a walk in his last three outings, and struck out 13 in 9.2 innings in June. Will Koger<\/a> threw a scoreless ninth, inducing a double play to face the minimum. At the dish, the TinCaps had drawn even over the first three innings, but went silent the rest of the way. Jack Costello\u2019s RBI double off Zach Root<\/a> got the team on the board, scoring Rosman Verdugo. Ryan Wideman picked up the team\u2019s second double of the game in the third inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lamar King<\/a> Jr. Kerrington Cross<\/a> reached base once on a single, while Zach Evans<\/a> drew the TinCaps\u2019 only walk of the game. The TinCaps went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position in the loss.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Lake Elsinore dominantly took the series opener, scoring 10 runs en route to a win over Stockton. The Storm shook up the lineup, and the adjustments bore fruit. George Bilecki went 2-for-5 out of the leadoff spot, hitting a triple and driving in two runs on a single in the sixth inning. Jose Verdugo<\/a> hit two singles, batting out of the two-hole, driving in two runs for the Storm. Dawson Willis<\/a>, who entered the game hitting .282 with an .855 OPS since arriving at the Storm, slid to third in the lineup and drove in two runs. Bradley Frye<\/a> has rediscovered his early-season form, as Lake Elsinore\u2019s third baseman had himself a three-hit game; it was his second three-hit effort in as many games. Yoiber Ocopio<\/a> drove in two runs, and Truitt Madonna<\/a> scored two runs, reaching base three times. Conner Westenburg remained in the nine-spot and hit a double as part of a three-hit game. Westenburg also stole his 30th base of the season, and is now 30-for-35 on stolen base attempts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jesus A. Castro picked up his first win stateside, as the right-hander from Guasave, Mexico, pitched five innings of two-run baseball. Castro struck out three, but his heavy sinker allowed him to generate nine ground ball outs from the Ports. The right-hander closes out his month of June with a 3.54 ERA, 25:8 K:BB ratio, and .228 opponent\u2019s average in 20.1 innings. Carson Swilling<\/a> allowed one run on one hit in two innings of relief, striking out one batter. Jeferson Villabona<\/a> closed out the win with two scoreless innings, striking out one.\u00a0<\/p>\n

ACL Padres (Won 8-4 vs ACL Brewers) (24-19 on the season)<\/p>\n

Kannon Kemp\u2019s third rehab start was his best so far, as the right-hander allowed just one hit in three innings. Kemp\u2019s fastball and sinker touched as high as 97.7 mph on Tuesday, with the right-hander showcasing his four-seam, sinker, changeup, and slider (thanks ACL Brewers and your beautiful Statcast technology). Kemp struck out three while walking just one, throwing 31 of 54 pitches for strikes. Dariel Polanco<\/a> allowed one run in 1.2 innings, striking out one. Landry Jurecka<\/a> threw the final 2.1 innings, allowing three runs. Jurecka\u2019s curveball was notoriously effective, as when he got ahead, the curveball was able to close out counts. The right-hander ends his June as one of the more effective relief arms in the system for the month, striking out 22 in 18 innings.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jhojan Downer drove in three runs for the Padres. The Padres catcher hit a two-run single in the seventh inning, with his third RBI having come on an RBI single earlier in the contest. Abraham Bastidas went 1-for-2 with a double, while Jhoan De La Cruz<\/a> walked and stole a base in his only plate appearance. Santiago Vargas<\/a> had two hits, scoring two runs. Luis De Leon<\/a> hit two singles and walked, scoring once. Five different Padres picked up one stolen base, and the team went 5-for-6 in stolen base attempts.<\/p>\n

The Padres Gold won a close game over their fellow Padres, with Darian Castillo\u2019s RBI single off Yohn Melendez<\/a> being the game-deciding hit. Carlos Alvarez and Raudi Perez engaged in a pitcher\u2019s duel, with both pitchers allowing two runs in three innings. Alvarez struck out four batters while walking just two, giving up four hits. Perez, meanwhile, allowed one hit and two walks while striking out three batters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The bullpens would be the deciding factor, and the Padres Gold\u2019s pen pitched four hitless innings to lead the way. Guillermo Romero<\/a> threw two scoreless innings, earning the win. Jose Perez<\/a> threw a scoreless inning in his pro debut, and Albert Perez<\/a> struck out two to earn the save. For the Padres, Brown, Yohn, and Melendez threw three innings in relief, striking out four. Melendez, however, walked three batters and gave up the go-ahead run in the sixth inning. Jesus Heredia<\/a> pitched a scoreless top of the seventh inning, keeping the deficit at one.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Eliander Primera<\/a> scored the first run of the game, which was hit for his last name. Primera stole third base in the first inning, coming in to score on a throwing error by Raudi Perez. The Padres Brown tied the game with an RBI single from Endy Rios<\/a> in the second, scoring Yonnaiker Hernandez. The Padres Brown went in front in the ensuing frame, as a Jeanfranco Fernandez<\/a> sac fly scored Dawry Guerrero. The lead didn\u2019t even last an inning, as Yorvin Morla<\/a> hit a game-tying single in the fourth. Gabriel Teran<\/a> drove a one-out walk for the Padres Gold in the sixth, and a two-out single by Johanneiker Leon<\/a> moved Teran to second. Darian Castillo then pulled a single to right field, scoring Teran to score what became the winning run. <\/p>\n
