CHEYENNE\u00a0\u2013 No one on the Cheyenne Sixers was happy after a 10-0 no-hit game suffered at the hands of the Idaho Falls Bandits on June 11.<\/p>\n
The second day of the Mark Rob\u00e9rt Classic on Friday night afforded the Sixers the opportunity to right that wrong.<\/p>\n
They managed to do just that.<\/p>\n
Thanks to clutch outs by the infield and timely, team-centered at-bats on the offensive end, the Sixers held on for an 8-4 win to hand Idaho Falls just its fifth loss of the season.<\/p>\n
“I loved the effort the entire game,” Sixers manager Brad Barker III said. “That’s been the whole part of our season, is we need to face adversity nonstop so we aren’t surprised in any situation.”<\/p>\n
Quentin King, Brayden Kamarad, Kyler Hauf and Mason Maggard added hits for the Sixers in the contest. Senior Zach Hall led Cheyenne from the plate Friday, going 2-for-2 with the only extra-base hit of the game \u2013 a lead-off double in the top of the third.<\/p>\n
“We just said we were the powerhouse (today),” Hall said. “We trust every single dude in that dugout, no matter what, and we have people that are going to back us up, no matter what, and they’re always going to be there for us, and they’re always going to do something right.”<\/p>\n
Starting pitcher Braden Pearson allowed five base runners, four of which came from walks, in the first two innings. However, he got out of each jam, allowing just one run. It was a common theme for the Sixers as the game went on, who allowed 11 base runners by walk or hit by pitch.<\/p>\n
That allowed Idaho Falls bases-loaded situations on five separate occasions, three of which it had no outs. The Bandits managed to score just three runs in those situations.<\/p>\n
“Our pitcher (knows) with the bases loaded and no outs to get a ground ball,” Hall said. “We have some of the best infielders you can ask for that are going to get the outs almost 100% of the time. We just have trust in everybody we have.”<\/p>\n
Idaho Falls opened the scoring in the top of the second after Makai Ferguson grounded into a fielder’s choice. Hauf tied the game in the next half-inning after reaching base off an error in the outfield. King grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Maggard to give Cheyenne a lead it wouldn’t surrender the rest of the way.<\/p>\n
A wild pitch, RBI single from Hauf and an RBI groundout from Kayden Tafoya extended the lead to 5-1 after the third inning. The teams each added a run in the fourth to make it 6-2 Sixers going into the sixth inning.<\/p>\n
That’s where the Sixers ran into trouble. The Bandits loaded the bases with no outs before Conner Cannon grounded into a fielder’s choice to cut the lead to three. A walk, hit by pitch and single later, and the Sixers faced another bases-loaded situation with the leading run at first base.<\/p>\n
Barker turned to his bullpen, bringing in junior Gage Broda to try to preserve the lead against the Bandits’ best hitter for the day in G Hernandez. It took Broda just four pitches to strike him out.<\/p>\n
The offense returned the favor, getting those two runs back to put an end to any hope of an Idaho Falls comeback.<\/p>\n
“(Broda) is a guy that has had some big innings, but that was probably the biggest inning of his career, and the biggest couple innings of his career,” Barker said. “He’s not afraid of adversity, and you love to see it.<\/p>\n
“… That’s part of who we are. We can’t live in the last pitch, and we can’t live too far ahead.
