CENTRAL LEE, IA (WGEM) – Postseason play is right around the corner for area Iowa high school baseball teams, and Central Lee believes it has the momentum to make a run.<\/p>\n
The Hawks enter the playoffs on a nine-game winning streak, and confidence inside the program is high.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got kids with all the talent in the world out here,\u201d freshman Kellen Weber said. \u201cIf everyone\u2019s on their game \u2014 I don\u2019t want to sound arrogant \u2014 but if everyone\u2019s on their game, I think we could beat any team in the state.\u201d<\/p>\n
Head coach Shane Weirather said the team\u2019s focus is on controlling what it can.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhoever we see, it\u2019s all about us,\u201d Weirather said. \u201cIf we play a good game, then we\u2019re going to win no matter who we play. So it\u2019s just the little things \u2014 tweak the baserunning a little bit, have better at-bats, and just trying to get better here this last week.\u201d<\/p>\n
Central Lee is leaning on its upperclassmen heading into the postseason, with younger players also filling key roles after last year\u2019s graduation losses.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe lost a lot of great seniors last year \u2014 we lost five starters \u2014 so just being able to step in and do whatever job is needed,\u201d Weber said. \u201cWhether that\u2019s driving in runs, getting on base at the start of an inning, being behind the plate, in the field \u2014 just trying to play clean baseball, play our brand of baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n
Junior Blake Davis is among the team leaders, emphasizing consistency and support.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just tell them, never get too up, never get too down \u2014 just stay right here,\u201d Davis said. \u201cAnd if they ever get down, I\u2019m there to support them, and everybody else here is, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for what the Hawks want to change in the playoffs, players said the goal is simple: keep doing what has worked.<\/p>\n
\u201cI really hope we can just keep that rolling through playoffs and everyone keeps their head up and plays team ball,\u201d Weber said. \u201cI think we have a chance to make a deep run.\u201d<\/p>\n
Central Lee will face either Davis County or Pella Christian in the district semifinal.<\/p>\n
