The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed infielder\/outfielder Ronny Simon off waivers from the Miami Marlins and optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis. Simon had been designated for assignment by Miami on Friday.<\/p>\n
The 25-year-old played 19 games for the Marlins this season prior to getting DFA\u2019d. He hit .234 with a .604 OPS, two doubles and five RBI in his first-career stint in the big leagues.<\/p>\n
In 15 games with Triple-A Jacksonville prior to getting his contract selected, Simon slashed .354\/.441\/.521 with a double, two triples, one home run and nine RBI. Across seven minor-league seasons between the Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs, Simon has a career .266\/.341\/.446 batting line with 116 doubles, 27 triples, 66 home runs, 293 RBI and 127 steals in 558 games.<\/p>\n
Defensively, the native of the Dominican Republic made appearances at second base, shortstop and in left field. He also spent four games as a designated hitter.<\/p>\n
To make room for Simon on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated right-handed reliever Tanner Rainey for assignment.<\/p>\n
Rainey signed a minor-league deal with the Pirates in the offseason and made 11 relief appearances after he had his contract selected on May 3. The 32-year-old totaled 7.2 innings and allowed nine runs on seven hits with six walks and nine strikeouts.<\/p>\n
Rainey took the loss for the Pirates on Sunday<\/a> against the Padres in San Diego after allowing four runs and recording just one out.<\/p>\n
