Ole Miss starter Cade Townsend leads the new class, a prospect whose personality is already as enticing as his pitch arsenal.

After the Cubs took him with the 23rd overall pick, Townsend described his competitive mindset in an interview with Marquee Sports Network.

“I love to spin the ball, and I love to just throw heaters by people.”

Cubs’ No. 23 overall pick, Cade Townsend, tells Cubs fans what they’re getting with him 🔥 pic.twitter.com/4o3BxRhKtd

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) July 11, 2026

That’s exactly what we want to hear from a high draft pick, and a prospect who is expected to quickly climb the organization’s pitching ranks. Townsend also said he isn’t afraid to mix in all of the 5-7 pitches he relies on. While his fastball can reach the upper 90s in velocity, his curveball, slider and cutter all grade as plus offerings and helped him become one of the best pitchers in this class.

Cade Townsend already is considered a top Cubs prospect

Some are speculating that Townsend could soon replace Jaxon Wiggins as the team’s highest-ranked pitcher, as the Cubs’ system is severely lacking in impact arms. FanGraphs ranked him as the fifth-best pitcher in the 2026 class with relatively low risk, while ESPN predicted he could reach the big leagues quicker than anyone the Cubs took in the draft this year.

I hope that’s true, considering the Cubs’ starting rotation will undoubtedly look very different after 2026. Shota Imanaga, Matthew Boyd and Jameson Taillon are all scheduled to hit free agency this winter, and I can’t imagine the team bringing back any of them. There are too many injury and performance issues with the current group, and the staff needs an infusion of younger and more talented arms to compete in the playoffs consistently.

Hopefully the Cubs’ pitching infrastructure can help Townsend move through the organization quickly and crack the big leagues sometime in 2028. He’s already showing great signs of maturity for only being 21-years-old and his stuff has great potential. And the team should be able to get more out of his extensive arsenal of pitches, which he already used to post a solid 3.94 ERA during his last season with Ole Miss. The righty also has a fantastic 88/22 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 64 innings pitched in 2026.

The Cubs were clearly motivated to bolster their pitching depth since they selected 16 pitchers out their 21 selections in the draft his year. And Townsend is looking like a guy who could be a key rotation piece in the future.

Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow

The Chicago Cubs loaded their farm system with new pitchers in this year’s MLB draft.
