PHILADELPHIA \u2014 As the trade deadline gets closer, it is plausible to think a right-handed hitter could be a target for the Phillies. Their lineup could use another piece. The whole order would look better if their $300-million shortstop, a right-handed hitter, could get going. On Saturday, in a 6-1 Phillies win over the Mets at Citizens Bank Park, Trea Turner showed signs of life.<\/p>\n
Turner went 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored. It was the kind of game the Phillies have needed more often from their shortstop this season.<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously, today was a really good day for him,\u201d Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly said.<\/p>\n
Turner\u2019s OPS jumped from .646 to .663. Even with his struggles, he still has a presence at the top of the Phillies\u2019 lineup. Most of Turner\u2019s plate appearances have come in the leadoff spot. He was there once again Saturday.<\/p>\n
Turner led off the bottom of the first inning with a single against Mets starter Sean Manaea. He quickly scored on a long home run hit into the second deck in left field by Kyle Schwarber, his MLB-leading 33rd on the year.<\/p>\n
Turner hit the ball hard in his next at-bat. He lined out to second baseman Marcus Semien to end the bottom of the second; the ball had a 106.7 mph exit velocity. It\u2019s nothing new to Turner.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel like I\u2019ve been hitting the ball pretty good for the last month,\u201d Turner said, \u201cbut the last 10 games or so, I\u2019ve been lining out quite a bit, which has been really frustrating. \u2026 I feel like I\u2019m doing what I\u2019m supposed to and just kind of either hitting it right at people or getting unlucky or whatever you want to call it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Luck was on Turner\u2019s side for the rest of the afternoon, starting in the fifth inning.<\/p>\n
Turner hit a leadoff homer in the fifth. He used his speed an inning later. Turner walked, stole second and then scored from there on a Bryce Harper single in the sixth. It was classic Turner. He used his speed again to notch an infield single in the seventh.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen he\u2019s going, it seems like it gets a lot easier for us offensively,\u201d Mattingly said. \u201cIt puts speed on the bases, puts (the defense) in pressure spots.\u201d<\/p>\n
Turner\u2019s homer was his second coming out of the All-Star break. He\u2019s a combined 4-for-8 in the last two games. The Phillies don\u2019t need his power. But it can help.<\/p>\n
\u201cTrea\u2019s one of those guys (that) gets all kinds of different hits,\u201d Mattingly said, \u201cbut then you see the explosion, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Turner\u2019s day was not perfect. He committed his 14th error on the season in the top of the second on a ball hit right to him. It did not hurt the Phillies. Starter Jes\u00fas Luzardo struck out back-to-back hitters to end the frame.<\/p>\n
Saturday was not the first time Turner has had success at the plate. There have been games, series and even some longer spurts of him performing well, appearing to be turning a corner. But it never lasts. Maybe Saturday was that. Or maybe it\u2019s the start of a resurgent second half.<\/p>\n
Turner wants to get there. He does not want to put too much pressure on himself. But he wants to see results, no matter how he gets there or how it looks.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s all about production, right?\u201d Turner said. \u201cI\u2019m not the prettiest player or whatever you want to call it. I don\u2019t do everything perfect, and I just find a way to help the team. \u2026 I feel like when I try to be perfect it just kind of sets me backwards. And I just gotta be who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n
