From the UA campus, the stadium lights, to the daily SEC baseball grind, they were all wrapped around a kid whose routine she barely recognized anymore.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"78\">\u201cGage is ultra competitive,\u201d Gould said. \u201cHe made his physical and mental gains through an extremely regimented meal and workout plan from about age 15 and has been striving to perfect it even more in the years since.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7b\">&#8220;Pizza, soda, fast food in general have been off the menu for quite some time (not to say he never indulges). Sleep schedule is nonnegotiable. There some say he\u2019s like an old man with his early bedtimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7e\">Those choices came with real costs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7h\">\u201cThe activities and events he\u2019s missed over the years for baseball are immense and just too many to list,\u201d Gould said. \u201cNow, though he doesn\u2019t think of them as sacrifices, he appreciates the value in what he did to accomplish what he has so far and has been quoted to say he \u2018has no regrets\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7k\">That\u2019s the part fans seldom see. It was the opportunity to tell his mom he not only gets to play in the Futures Game, but start.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-22\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8a\">The Batesville kid with a chip on his shoulder gets to show off his potential during the MLB All-Star weekend.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-23\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8d\">\u201cI was just so happy for him when he texted me he was getting the start. Incredibly proud,\u201d Gould said. \u201cI\u2019m learning how to share in these moments from a distance and thankful the organization feels it\u2019s important to document and capture them for us so we can see and \u2018feel\u2019 it with him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-24\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8g\">For a mom who could once jump in the car and be at Baum-Walker in time for warmups, the distance is its own adjustment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-25\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8j\">Now, she\u2019s watching her son\u2019s milestones through televised angles and social media clips, trusting that the cameras will catch what her eyes can\u2019t from home.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-26\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8m\">Still, when the broadcast cuts to Citizens Bank Park, and he\u2019s hopping over the first-base line, everything narrows to one image.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-27\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8p\">\u201cWatching him hop over the first base line and take the mound was sublime,\u201d Gould said. \u201cHe\u2019s worked most of his life for the moments he&#8217;s having right now, and it\u2019s just an extraordinary time for our family as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-28\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8s\">Then she adds the line that tells you exactly how a pitcher\u2019s mom thinks.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-29\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8v\">\u201cBut to be perfectly honest, I was just hoping he\u2019d go out and shove it down someone\u2019s throat,\u201d Gould said. \u201cI can be \u2018mean\u2019 like that because a pitcher&#8217;s mom knows just how fast the table can turn. You gotta take what you can when you can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-30\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8y\">This is a woman who has watched enough baseball to understand how fragile a dominant outing can be, how thin the margin is between future ace and just another arm in the rotation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-31\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"91\">Gould&#8217;s not wishing for a nice appearance. However, she&#8217;s hoping, fiercely, that her kid stamps his name all over a stage designed to showcase tomorrow\u2019s stars.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-32\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"94\">At the same time, she knows every pitch is a risk.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-33\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"97\">\u201cKnowing it could all end in an instant\u2026\u201d Gould said, \u201cI think every athlete\u2019s mom considers that at one time or another.
