SELINSGROVE \u2014 After opening up a 3-0 lead through two-and-a-half innings, the DuBois 9-11 Baseball All-Stars weren\u2019t quite able to hold off a late surge by Glenmore Eagle that saw them score two runs in the home half of the third and three more in the fifth for a 5-3 come-from-behind victory that eliminated DuBois from the state tournament on Friday morning in Selinsgrove.<\/p>\n
The DuBois offense managed to string together one run in each of the first three innings while keeping Glenmore Eagle off the board in the first two frames to open up that 3-0 lead.<\/p>\n
Offensively, DuBois was led by Macklin Mays, who had an RBI triple, with Jude Bowley adding an RBI double and Tyson Hilliard doubling, as well. AJ Guerndt and Collin Roman each singled for DuBois, with Roman\u2019s driving in a run.<\/p>\n
Mays got the starting nod for DuBois and pitched the first 3-2\/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs on two hits and six walks while striking out six. Guerndt pitched the final 1-1\/3 and was charged with three runs, though only two were earned, on four hits and two walks.<\/p>\n
Cohen Maxwell shook off the early runs scored by DuBois and ended up going the distance \u2014 reaching the pitch limit, 85, on the first pitch to the final batter; the rules allow the pitcher to finish the batter if they start. He allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits and a walk and struck out nine.<\/p>\n
Ryan Fuches tripled, singled and drove in three runs for Glenmore Eagle, with Owen Bratter adding two hits and an RBI and Andrew Goodby and Maxwell each singling once.<\/p>\n
DuBois came firing out of the gates with the 10 a.m. start time, recording two extra-base hits in the first inning to get its first run. Hilliard opened play with a leadoff double to left, and with two outs, Mays tripled to right field to plate Hilliard and make it 1-0. Maxwell managed to strand Mays at third, though, to keep it there.<\/p>\n
Mays walked the Maxwell to open the home half, then after a pop out to catcher Malcolm Orcutt, he walked Bratter as well, but the defense quickly got out of that tough spot, as Mays got Chase Locker to fly out to Wyatt Lee in right field, and Lee fired to Hilliard covering second to double off Maxwell and retire the side.<\/p>\n
Guerndt reached as the beneficiary of an error to lead off the top of the second, and after he advanced to second on a passed ball with one out, Bowley ripped a double to center to bring him home and make it a 2-0 game. Once again, though, Maxwell limited the damage to one by striking out the next two DuBois hitters.<\/p>\n
Glenmore loaded the bases without recording a hit in the bottom of the second thanks to walks to Asher Schmitt and Ryan Purse and an error that allowed Lincoln Conumale to reach, but Mays responded by forcing a fielder\u2019s choice and getting two strikeouts to keep his shutout intact through two innings.<\/p>\n
Lee led off the top of the third by working a walk for DuBois, and after two quick outs on a pop fly and a strikeout, Lee advanced to second on a wild pitch, then took third in the same manner before scoring on Roman\u2019s two-out RBI single to shallow right field, pushing the lead to 3-0.<\/p>\n
Glenmore managed to crack the goose egg on its portion of the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, though, scoring a pair to cut the lead back down to one run \u2014 and it did so with all of the action coming with two outs after Mays struck out the first two hitters he faced.<\/p>\n
Maxwell sparked the rally with a two-out walk, and after Fuches ripped a triple to center to plate Maxwell, Bratter followed with an RBI single to plate Fuches and make it a 3-2 ballgame.<\/p>\n
Guerndt managed a two-out single in the top half of the fourth, but he was unable to score, and after a two-out walk to Glenmore\u2019s Liam Wallace in the bottom half, Guerndt \u2014\u00a0now on in relief \u2014 managed to return the favor by stranding him.<\/p>\n
The first 1-2-3 inning on either side came in the top of the fifth, as Maxwell set the DuBois side down in order, and his team responded by scoring three runs \u2014 all crossing with two outs, as well \u2014\u00a0to take its first lead of the game.<\/p>\n
Goodby started the rally with a one-out single, but after Guerndt got Michael Reiter to fly out to Holden Frederick in center, DuBois was one out away from getting out of the inning.<\/p>\n
Glenmore answered with three straight singles, though \u2014 one each by Maxwell, Fuches and Bratter, with Fuches\u2019 scoring a run to tie it 3-3. Then, after Chase Lockner walked to load the bases, Asher Schmitt put the bat on the ball and reached on an error that allowed both Fuches and Bratter to score, putting his team ahead 5-3.<\/p>\n
DuBois had just one chance left to overcome the deficit, and Maxwell, having found his rhythm, set down the side in order for the second-straight frame on a groundout, a liner to short and a strikeout to seal the deal and push his team on in the losers\u2019 bracket.<\/p>\n
