{"id":766559,"date":"2026-07-31T20:30:16","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T20:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/766559\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T20:30:16","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T20:30:16","slug":"rays-place-ace-shane-mcclanahan-on-injured-list-with-back-tightness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/766559\/","title":{"rendered":"Rays Place Ace Shane McClanahan On Injured List With Back Tightness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">Uh, oh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">The Tampa Bay Rays <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RaysPR\/status\/2083259105418825944\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">announced<\/a> Friday that they&#8217;ve placed ace Shane McClanahan on the 15-day injured list after the left-hander experienced lower back pain during his Thursday outing against the Texas Rangers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">Rays president Erik Neander expressed in an interview on 95.7 WDAE &amp; AM620 that McClanahan&#8217;s injury is &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TBTimes_Rays\/status\/2083256386142576986\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">pretty minor<\/a>&#8221; and the two-time All-Star should only miss &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/957WDAE\/status\/2083256000769818725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">two starts<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">Right-hander Alex Cook was called up from the Triple-A Durham Bulls to take McClanahan&#8217;s roster spot. In Triple A, Cook, who&#8217;s yet to pitch in MLB, has recorded a 3.78 ERA over 33 \u2153 innings this season, managing to strike out 28.5% of the batters he&#8217;s faced. Cook is expected to provide bullpen depth, as opposed to simply filling McClanahan\u2019s rotation spot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">McClanahan&#8217;s injury comes against the backdrop of him not pitching for the Rays since 2023 prior to this season. In 2023, McClanahan underwent Tommy John surgery, which ultimately sidelined him for the entirety of the 2024 season. Then, prior to 2025 spring training, McClanahan experienced nerve irritation in his triceps, causing him to undergo surgery that August, as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">Through 20 starts this season, McClanahan owns a 3.09 ERA and a 9-6 record across 99.0 innings pitched. Overall, he has a career 3.04 ERA across four major-league seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ff-h fs-16 lh-1pt6 mg-b-15 article-content\" use-external-image=\"false\" data-v-273d04fe=\"\">Could the Rays make a trade for a pitcher in the wake of McClanahan&#8217;s injury? They&#8217;ve been mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxsports.com\/stories\/mlb\/2026-mlb-trade-deadline-rumors-news-trades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">trade rumors<\/a> for Detroit Tigers superstar left-hander Tarik Skubal and New York Mets right-hander Freddy Peralta.
