{"id":768304,"date":"2026-08-02T20:57:13","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T20:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/768304\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T20:57:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T20:57:13","slug":"mets-claim-shawn-ross-designate-joey-gerber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/768304\/","title":{"rendered":"Mets Claim Shawn Ross, Designate Joey Gerber"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mets announced that catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rosssh01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-08-02_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Shawn Ross<\/a> has been claimed off waivers from the Pirates.\u00a0 To create 40-man roster space, right-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gerbejo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=www.mlbtraderumors.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-08-02_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Joey Gerber<\/a> was designated for assignment.<\/p>\n<p>Gerber has a 4.32 ERA over 8 1\/3 innings and seven appearances for New York this season, amidst multiple trips back and forth between the active roster and Triple-A Syracuse.\u00a0 The Mets sent Gerber to the minors about a month ago, and placed him on the Triple-A injured list earlier this week.\u00a0 His health status could prevent another team from making a waiver claim, and since Gerber isn\u2019t eligible to decline an outright assignment, he\u2019ll have to remain the Mets organization if he clears waivers and is outrighted.<\/p>\n<p>In all likelihood this is a paper move to open some space on the 40-man roster, without much worry on the Mets\u2019 part that Gerber will be claimed.\u00a0 Beyond his small sample size of MLB action this year, Gerber has struggled to an 8.10 ERA in 26 2\/3 innings with Syracuse, though a .349 BABIP may be mostly responsible for that inflated ERA.<\/p>\n<p>The Pirates designated Ross for assignment earlier this week, and the 26-year-old will now be changing organizations for the first time in his career.\u00a0 While primarily a catcher, Ross has seen a lot of time as a corner infielder and has dabbled at second base, shortstop, and in the outfield during his four years in Pittsburgh\u2019s farm system.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the defensive versatility, Ross has some good power when he is able to make contact, but he has struck out 741 times in his 2189 career plate appearances in the minors.\u00a0 A lopsided .211\/.403\/.614 slash line in 77 Double-A PA earned Ross another look at the Triple-A level (where he struggled to a .598 OPS in 116 PA), and an injury crunch in the Pirates\u2019 catching corps led to Ross\u2019 MLB debut on July 25.\u00a0 Over two games and five trips to the plate, Ross struck out twice but also went yard for his first big league home run and hit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Mets announced that catcher Shawn Ross has been claimed off waivers from the Pirates.\u00a0 To create 40-man&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":768305,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2290],"tags":[5,33940,71118],"class_list":["post-768304","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-baseball","tag-baseball","tag-joey-gerber","tag-shawn-ross"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/channels.im\/@mlb\/117027919844855468","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/768304","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=768304"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/768304\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/768305"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=768304"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=768304"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/mlb\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=768304"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
