Pittsburgh revamped its bullpen at the trade deadline. The club added Luke Weaver<\/a>, Camilo Doval<\/a>, and Lake Bachar<\/a> to a unit that has struggled to put away games for much of the year. The flurry of moves bumped right-hander Ron Marinaccio<\/a> off the roster, the team announced.<\/p>\n

Marinaccio spent less than two weeks in the organization. He came to Pittsburgh in late July through a cash deal<\/a> with the Padres. The righty had recently been designated for assignment. He\u2019ll now go through the DFA process again after just four appearances as a Pirate.<\/p>\n

The 31-year-old Marinaccio has pitched to a 4.99 ERA in 37 appearances between San Diego and Pittsburgh this year. It\u2019s easily his worst season as a big leaguer. He was a steady option with the Yankees from 2022 through 2024, then put together a sub-1.00 ERA in seven games with the Padres last year. Marinaccio has a career-low 18.4% strikeout rate across 52 1\/3 innings in 2026. His Stuff+ has tumbled to 94, and he has a discouraging 24.5% called+swinging strike rate.<\/p>\n

Marinaccio has sat at 93.8 mph with the fastball this season, right in line with his career norm. The shape of the pitch has changed, though. Marinaccio\u2019s four-seamer has just 13 inches of induced vertical break this year. That number was 15-17 inches during his time with the Yankees. Opponents are slugging .483 with five home runs against the pitch. The lack of ride on the fastball may be affecting Marinaccio\u2019s other pitches. His changeup in particular has been a problem. It has a -5 Run Value, which ranks in the 5th percentile.<\/p>\n

Given his experience as a solid big-league reliever, Marinaccio could generate some interest on the waiver wire. Another team could identify a mechanical fix to get Marinaccio\u2019s arsenal back on track. He hasn\u2019t been outrighted in his career, so he\u2019ll have to accept a minor league assignment if no team adds him through waivers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Pittsburgh revamped its bullpen at the trade deadline.
