The Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a> had a deal in place for New York Mets<\/a> pitcher Clay Holmes<\/a> that fell apart just before Monday\u2019s MLB trade deadline.<\/p>\n

The Mets and Diamondbacks reportedly agreed to terms on a trade that would have sent the All-Star right-hander to Phoenix. According to the Arizona Republic\u2019s Nick Piecoro, the Mets \u201cbacked out of a potential deal\u201d<\/a> over concerns regarding the medical records of one of the Diamondbacks\u2019 prospects headed to New York in the swap.<\/p>\n

Per the report, the two sides tried to renegotiate with different players but failed to come to an agreement amid the looming deadline.<\/p>\n

The Mets ended up trading Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor<\/a><\/a> to the Chicago Cubs<\/a>, who are among Arizona\u2019s competitors for an NL Wild Card spot.<\/p>\n

Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen expressed frustration Monday and told reporters that<\/a> the team was \u201cvery close\u201d on \u201cmultiple\u201d deals, with only a smaller trade for Lars Nootbar materializing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had some things just not go our way. It didn\u2019t happen for us,\u201d Hazen said. \u201cWe took some runs at a lot of pitchers. We made a lot of players available. It just didn\u2019t happen for us. \u2026 We offered a lot, all the way to the top of our farm system.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Diamondbacks do have several quality pitchers expected to return from the IL some time during the stretch run of the regular season. Ace Corbin Burnes<\/a> and veteran starters Michael Soroka<\/a> and Ryne Nelson<\/a> are all working their way back to the mound over the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

But given the injury luck Arizona has had this season, banking on a smooth recovery for all of their pitchers may be wishful thinking.
