PHOENIX \u2014 The Arizona Diamondbacks spent the trade deadline searching for more help in their starting rotation but ultimately came away empty-handed despite coming close to landing a proven arm.<\/p>\n

The D-Backs were linked to several starting pitchers ahead of the deadline, as their own rotation has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency throughout the season. One name reportedly on Arizona\u2019s radar was New York Mets right-hander Clay Holmes.<\/p>\n

According<\/a> to The Arizona Republic\u2019s Nick Piecoro, the trade would have included a D-Backs prospect before concerns surfaced during the medical review. The Mets ultimately backed out of the agreement and later traded Holmes to the Chicago Cubs, leaving Arizona without the frontline pitching help it had targeted.<\/p>\n

The failed trade won\u2019t change the Diamondbacks\u2019 standing in the National League playoff race, but it does reshape the path they\u2019ll have to take to get there.<\/p>\n

Instead of plugging a proven veteran into the rotation, Arizona will rely on the pitchers already in its clubhouse while waiting for reinforcements from the injured list. That places even greater importance on every turn through the rotation, no matter who takes the mound.<\/p>\n

Help could still be on the way, just not through the trade market. Michael Soroka is nearing a return, while Corbin Burnes is expected back in September and could provide the boost the front office was looking for. While neither is a trade acquisition, their returns could give the D-Backs the same veteran presence they were hoping to add before the deadline.<\/p>\n

The biggest question is how quickly they\u2019ll be able to get back into the fold and whether they can return to the elite level they were playing at before their injuries.<\/p>\n

Arizona clearly recognized the rotation as an area of need before the deadline with its pursuit of Holmes, but now the confidence shifts back to the pitchers already in-house.<\/p>\n

The biggest storyline isn\u2019t the failed trade, but how the Diamondbacks respond without it. If the starting rotation performs well enough to secure a postseason berth, the collapsed deal will become little more than a trade deadline footnote.<\/p>\n

But if pitching struggles derail Arizona\u2019s postseason hopes, the deal that never happened could become one of the biggest \u201cwhat ifs\u201d of the season.<\/p>\n
