With the Orioles selling off major league talent for the second straight trade deadline, I\u2019ve offered a dozen thoughts, each in 50 words or less:<\/p>\n
1. \u201cIf you\u2019re expected to do something and you fall short, there\u2019s consequences to that. That\u2019s just the reality of the industry.\u201d That was Pete Alonso\u2019s mature response to Mike Elias selling at the trade deadline, a sentiment shared by other players. This club has been under .500 since April 30.\u00a0<\/p>\n
2. For that reason, I had little issue with selling at the trade deadline, but such decisions aren\u2019t made in a vacuum. Throwing in the towel when only 2 1\/2 games back is a very disheartening message to season-ticket holders and fans who invest much in the Orioles.<\/p>\n
3. It\u2019s only the latest example of this franchise\u2019s bedside manner leaving much to be desired. Current leadership often operates as though the Orioles didn\u2019t exist \u2014 or lose a ton for decades \u2014 before 2018. Few professional teams have received more from their community and given less for a long time.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
4. I touched on this Monday, but the underperformance of Adley Rutschman and Gunnar Henderson going back to the second half of 2024 is a major reason why the Orioles got to this point. If your stars aren\u2019t going to be stars, it\u2019s really tough to win to any meaningful degree.<\/p>\n
5. Elias still talking up Baltimore\u2019s playoff chances comes across as patronizing after selling off multiple players and adding little of real consequence, but stranger things have happened in baseball. Still, this club would have to go 30-20 the rest of the way just to win 84 games. \u00a0<\/p>\n
6. It\u2019s strange that the Orioles faced Grayson Rodriguez the day after trading Taylor Ward. While Ward has outperformed Rodriguez by a huge margin in 2026, the Angels have three more years of control, which is why I didn\u2019t love such a short-term return for giving up on the former prospect.<\/p>\n
7. Upon hearing about Ward, Trevor Rogers figured he was \u201cvery likely\u201d the next to go on what amounted to a long day. \u201cThankfully, it didn\u2019t [happen], and I\u2019m really happy to be here.\u201d A Rogers extension would cushion some of Monday\u2019s disappointment, but you\u2019d assume the qualifying offer is inevitable. \u00a0<\/p>\n
