For anyone who has watched or followed the SF Giants for the majority of this season, it\u2019s hard to be all that optimistic about the future. Most optimism with the organization has to do with its burgeoning farm system which has received a huge infusion of talent<\/a> after the MLB Draft and trade deadline.<\/p>\n

Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper feels better than most<\/a> though when it comes to the immediate future for the Giants. He appeared on KNBR this week and said of the Giants: \u201cThey will compete next year for a Wild Card spot, if there is baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s an important stipulation as the looming lockout<\/a> deserves mention in any discussion of the 2027 season. Still, it\u2019s a glass-half-full view that isn\u2019t entirely without basis.<\/p>\n

Just last season the Giants were 81-81 and had a legitimate shot at a Wild Card spot coming down the stretch. In the era of three Wild Card spots just about any team has a chance if they have a decent year so if the Giants can get closer to .500 next season and make a late push they have a chance.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s not going to happen with their current roster, though. San Francisco has to invest meaningful resources into the pitching staff if they want to contend next season and it\u2019s not clear the organization is willing to do that.<\/p>\n

It may take time for Giants’ investment in pitching to reach big league level<\/p>\n

The Giants have added a ton of pitching through the draft<\/a> and trade deadline which was much-needed. Now they have young arms in the organization like Jackson Flora, Carson Bolemon, Henry Lalane, and Ramon Marquez who could be rotation arms down the road.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s going to take time for them to develop though so it may be more practical to look at 2028 or 2029 as the next time the Giants will realistically be able to contend.<\/p>\n

One never knows with baseball, though. A team can stink one year and then turn it around next year so maybe luck will be on San Francisco\u2019s side after it\u2019s seemed like so much has gone wrong for San Francisco in 2026.<\/p>\n

Kuiper has watched this team for decades and if he feels the team has a shot to be competitive next year then he\u2019s probably right. A lot of Giants fans are adjusting their expectations to later this decade or maybe even the 2030s for when the team will be truly competitive again but maybe they can surprise us.\u00a0<\/p>\n
