San Francisco Giants<\/a> third baseman Matt Chapman<\/a> said he\u2019s likely getting surgery Tuesday for a hernia and a core muscle tear, pending a visit to Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia on Monday. Chapman will fly to Philadelphia on Sunday.<\/p>\n

While Chapman doesn\u2019t want to jump to conclusions, he said he\u2019s pretty sure it\u2019s going to result in surgery and his season being over. Team doctors, in addition to Meyers, looked at the imagery and confirmed the hernia. Manager Tony Vitello<\/a> added that surgery is \u201cmore likely than not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve already tried to get it better for five weeks. It\u2019s not getting any better,\u201d said Chapman, who had previously expressed optimism about a possible return this season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019m just disappointed right now for the most part,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I knew something wasn\u2019t right. I knew that this had been bothering me for a while, and for some reason it just wasn\u2019t getting better, and now I know why. It\u2019s been like the whole season, so it makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chapman played in 84 games before his injury, recording seven home runs and 42 RBIs while hitting .235\/.324\/.368. The 33-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list July 1 with an abdominal strain. He last played June 30.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Schmitt update: Another injured Giant, infielder Casey Schmitt<\/a>, spoke Friday for the first time since suffering a torn meniscus in his left knee on July 27. Schmitt underwent surgery last Friday, and he was visibly emotional while talking to reporters pregame in the Giants\u2019 clubhouse.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt sucks, but sometimes it\u2019s just how things go,\u201d said Schmitt, who was enjoying a breakout season, totaling 21 homers and 55 RBIs in 98 games while slashing .271\/.301\/.483. \u201cJust happy with the way I was able to show up every day and kind of just put that work in \u2026 because I know there was a lot of questions around me, whether I could do it at this level.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schmitt has already shed his crutches and was on his third day of rehab as of Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Asked about a possible return this season, Schmitt said he\u2019s not sure, acknowledging this isn\u2019t the type of injury you want to rush. But he said he\u2019s looking forward to having a healthy offseason, one where he does not need to be \u201ccautious about the workload that I\u2019m putting on my knee.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s probably the main thing to take out of this whole thing,\u201d Schmitt said. \u201cI\u2019m happy to be able to do that and have a full offseason of getting my body ready for the next season.\u201d<\/p>\n

MLB debut: The Giants called up right-hander Trent Harris on Friday and\u00a0optioned right-hander Tristan Beck to Triple-A Sacramento. The organization\u2019s No. 11 prospect per\u00a0MLB.com<\/a>, Harris learned the news on Wednesday when River Cats manager Dave\u00a0Brundage called him into his office.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been chasing it for a long time. Ups and downs through the journey,\u201d Harris said. \u201cIt\u2019s always worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old went undrafted in 2023 out of UNC Pembroke, but he rose through the Giants farm system and up to Triple-A by his second full season. In 29 appearances (three starts) with Sacramento this year, Harris posted a 3.12 ERA and struck out 52 batters in 40\u2153 innings.<\/p>\n

Harris struggled to a 5.44 ERA with the River Cats in 2025.
