The Cincinnati Reds have released former Texas Rangers outfielder Sam Haggerty, according to the outfielder’s transactions log on MLB.com<\/a>. Haggerty, 32, signed a minor-league deal with the Reds on June 13, six days after being released by the Rangers.<\/p>\n

Haggerty, a switch hitter, signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers in the 2024-25 offseason. Texas selected his contract in May 2025. Unfortunately, he missed a large chunk of the 2025 season due to a nagging ankle injury. An Achilles tear kept him out for most of the 2024 season with the Seattle Mariners. He posted 0.2 bWAR and a .253\/.328\/.370 (98 wRC+) slash line with two home runs, 12 RBI, and 12 stolen bases across 64 games with Texas last year.<\/p>\n

Haggerty struggled significantly with the Rangers this year<\/a>, posting -0.2 fWAR and a .159\/.213\/.182 (12 wRC+) with no home runs and one RBI in 47 plate appearances across 36 games. The Rangers designated Haggerty for assignment in early June after reinstating him from the bereavement\/family medical emergency list. At the same time, Texas reinstated shortstop Corey Seager and outfielder Wyatt Langford from the injured list and optioned utilityman Cody Freeman and outfielder Alejandro Osuna to Triple-A Round Rock.<\/p>\n

Haggerty’s struggles continued with the Reds’ Triple-A affiliate, as the outfielder hit just .205\/.293\/.273 with one home run and five RBI in 28 games.<\/p>\n

Rangers should avoid reuniting with Sam Haggerty<\/p>\n

It’s very unlikely that the Rangers will reunite with Haggerty. The Rangers are pretty set with Evan Carter, Wyatt Langford, and Brandon Nimmo in the outfield. Cam Cauley has struggled in his rookie season, but Haggerty was arguably worse for Texas this year. Cauley has a much higher ceiling as a young player and can play shortstop and second base in addition to the outfield.<\/p>\n

The Rangers recently optioned Osuna to Triple-A Round Rock<\/a> and promoted corner infielder\/outfielder Jonah Bride<\/a> to the majors as a corresponding move, but Osuna still appears to be a better option than Haggerty. Maybe the Rangers will consider bringing back Haggerty on a minor-league deal, but he likely would have a clearer path back to the majors with a different team.<\/p>\n

There may be a club willing to take a chance on Haggerty despite his struggles this year. Just four seasons ago, Haggerty posted 1.4 fWAR and a .256\/.335\/.403 (115 wRC+) slash line with five home runs, 23 RBI, and five stolen bases in 83 games with Seattle. Still, he isn’t a good fit for Texas. <\/p>\n
