PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) \u2013 On the day Oneil Cruz returned to the Pirates, good news about shortstop Konnor Griffin. He\u2019s ahead of schedule and could be back in a couple weeks.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Griffin suffered a torn tendon on his ring finger on July 5 and was placed on the 60-day injured list.<\/p>\n
Monday was his six-week follow-up with team physicians including the Pirates hand specialist and head orthopedic surgeon and Griffin \u2018is a little bit ahead of schedule’.<\/p>\n
According to Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk, he\u2019s been able to transition out of hand splints and over the next 48-72 hours he will be able to put his hand in a glove for the first time since the injury. Griffin will also be cleared to fully grip the bat.<\/p>\n
He had already been doing every other baseball activity that didn\u2019t involve that finger and they believe that will make for a \u2018smoother and quicker transition back to baseball activities.\u2019<\/p>\n
The plan is to send Griffin to Bradenton when the team goes on the road Thursday. He will start playing catch and begin a swinging progression.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll in all, very, very good news for Konnor,\u201d Tomczyk said.<\/p>\n
He wouldn\u2019t be eligible to return, based on the rules of the injured list, until September 4. They will know more about when he will return after time in Florida.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut, at this time, we\u2019re optimistic that that first day he\u2019s eligible to return is still in play at this time,\u201d Tomczyk said.<\/p>\n
