Anderson to make MLB debut after Mariners call up former LSU left-hander<\/p>\n

Seattle Mariners left-hander Kade Anderson was promoted from Double-A Arkansas to the major leagues to start Saturday\u2019s game against the Chicago Cubs.<\/p>\n

Anderson, 22, is one of the top pitching prospects in baseball and dominated the competition in his first minor league season. Anderson is 10-1 with a 1.06 ERA in 18 starts for Double-A Arkansas, striking out 135 batters and walking 13 in 931\/3 innings.<\/p>\n

The Mariners selected Anderson with the third pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft out of LSU, where he was an all-American. When he starts, Anderson will become the first player from his draft class to make his major league debut.<\/p>\n

It was not clear if Anderson will be making a spot start to help Seattle form a six-man rotation or take the place of one of the Mariners\u2019 five right-handed starting pitchers. In early August, Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto said Anderson would start his major league career as a starter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not going to put Kade in the bullpen,\u201d Dipoto said. \u201cHe\u2019s the best starting pitcher in the minor leagues.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is no obvious candidate for Anderson to replace. After the Mariners traded right-hander Luis Castillo to the Chicago White Sox ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, Seattle was left with former All-Stars Logan Gilbert and Bryan Woo, former first-round pick Emerson Hancock, George Kirby and Bryce Miller.<\/p>\n

Woo, who was originally scheduled to start Saturday, left his last outing after 75 pitches due to shoulder soreness. But Woo has remained with the team since his most recent appearance.<\/p>\n

Anderson, who was to arrive in Seattle on Friday, joins the club at a time when it is in need of reinforcements.<\/p>\n

The Mariners are 60-68 after the Milwaukee Brewers beat them 7-4 on Thursday. Seattle is 5-9 over its last 14 games, and sits four games back of the Houston Astros in the AL West. Earlier this week, the Brewers beat the Mariners 22-0, which matched baseball\u2019s modern-era record for the biggest shutout.<\/p>\n

Seattle won the AL West and reached the AL Championship Series last season.<\/p>\n

The Cubs, meanwhile, are 74-54 and occupy the top wild-card spot in the National League.<\/p>\n

Anderson, a left-hander from Madisonville, will become the 94th major leaguer in LSU history. He is the seventh Major League Baseball player produced by Tigers head coach Jay Johnson during his five-year tenure. LSU has had at least one former player make his MLB debut in 32 of the last 36 seasons.<\/p>\n

Johnson\u2019s other LSU major leaguers are right-handed pitcher Paul Skenes (Pittsburgh Pirates), outfielder Dylan Crews (Washington Nationals), right-handed pitcher Grant Taylor (Chicago White Sox), right-handed pitcher Paul Gervase (Los Angeles Dodgers), left-handed pitcher Gage Jump (Athletics) and infielder Tommy White (Athletics).<\/p>\n

Anderson, who pitched at LSU in 2024 and 2025, was a first-team all-American and first-team all-Southeastern Conference performer, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2025 College World Series after leading LSU to its eighth national championship. He was also named the Baseball America College Pitcher of the Year.<\/p>\n

He was 2-0 in the CWS with victories over Arkansas and Coastal Carolina, posting a 0.56 ERA while allowing one run on six hits in 16 innings with 17 strikeouts.<\/p>\n

Anderson fired the second complete-game shutout in LSU\u2019s CWS history when he blanked Coastal Carolina with a 1-0 three-hitter in Game 1 of the CWS Finals.<\/p>\n

He finished 12-1 with a 3.18 ERA and 180 strikeouts in 119 innings. He completed the year No. 1 in the nation in total strikeouts and No. 7 in strikeouts per nine innings (13.61).<\/p>\n

His 180 strikeouts in 2025 ranks No. 3 on the LSU single-season strikeouts list, trailing only Skenes (209 strikeouts, 2023) and Ben McDonald (202 strikeouts, 1989).<\/p>\n
